DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1940 (ANS) STATION IS ABOUT 7.0 MILES W OF HOT SPRINGS, 12.0 MILES NNE OF PLAINS ON A HIGH PROMINENT ROCK AND TIMBERED PEAK KNOWN AS MOUNT BALDY. STATION, STAMPED BALDY 1940 IS A STANDARD BRONZE DISK SET IN BEDROCK THAT PROJECTS ABOUT 3 INCHES ABOVE THE GROUND. IT IS ABOUT 30 YARDS SE OF THE HIGHEST POINT OF MOUNTAIN, 30.0 FEET ESE OF THE E EDGE OF A LARGE CIRCULAR CAIRN, AND 312.17 FEET ESE OF THE CENTER OF BALDY LOOKOUT HOUSE. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1, STAMPED BALDY NO. 1, 1940 IS A STANDARD BRONZE DISK SET IN BEDROCK FLUSH WITH THE GROUND AT ABOUT THE SAME ELEVATION AS THE STATION. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2, STAMPED BALDY NO. 2, 1940 IS A STANDARD BRONZE DISK SET IN BEDROCK FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. IT IS ABOUT 7.0 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION. STATION IS REACHED AS FOLLOWS--FROM THE NORTHERN PACIFIC DEPOT IN PLAINS GO NW ON STATE HIGHWAY 3 FOR 0.15 MILE TO A GRAVELED ROAD THAT GOES N AT THE E SIDE OF SCHOOLHOUSE. TAKE GRAVELED ROAD AND GO N 6.2 MILES TO RAILROAD CROSSING. CONTINUE N 0.65 MILE TO A FORK, JUST AFTER GOING UP A SHORT PITCH AND A SHARP CURVE. TAKE RIGHT FORK AND GO N ON A PARTIALLY IMPROVED DIRT ROAD 0.9 MILE TO SIDE ROAD ON BOTH SIDES OF ROAD. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD 0.2 MILE TO A FORK AT SIGN BALDY LOOKOUT - KOHLER CABINS. KEEP RIGHT FORK STRAIGHT AHEAD AND GO 0.9 MILE TO A FORK, TAKE LEFT FORK AND GO 0.3 MILE TO A FORK. GO STRAIGHT AHEAD ON LEFT FORK 1.1 MILES TO LOGGING ROAD ON THE LEFT. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD ON RIGHT FORK AND GO 0.4 MILE TO ROAD ON THE RIGHT LEADING TO SHEEP CORRAL. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD ON LEFT FORK 0.8 MILE TO KOHLER CABINS AT END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. FROM HERE TAKE MOUNT BALDY TRAIL 5 MILES UPHILL TO LOOKOUT HOUSE AND STATION. STATION IS A 2-1/2 TO 3 HOUR PACK.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1968 (LGB) THE STATION IS LOCATED ON BALDY MOUNTAIN, ABOUT 11.5 MILES NORTH-NORTHEAST OF PLAINS AND 7 MILES WEST OF HOT SPRINGS. TO REACH FROM THE POST OFFICE IN PLAINS, GO WEST ON U.S. HIGHWAY 10 A AND STATE HIGHWAY 200 FOR 0.2 MILE TO A SIDE ROAD ON THE RIGHT. TURN RIGHT AND GO NORTH ON A PAVED ROAD FOR 0.35 MILE TO A FOREST SERVICE RANGER STATION ON THE RIGHT. CONTINUE AHEAD ON THE PAVED ROAD FOR 0.65 MILE TO THE END OF THE PAVEMENT. CONTINUE AHEAD ON THE GRAVELED ROAD FOR 3.9 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD ON THE LEFT. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD NORTH ON THE GRAVELED ROAD FOR 1.8 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD ON THE RIGHT AND A SIGN CLARK CREEK ROAD. CONTINUE AHEAD ON THE MAIN ROAD FOR 1.3 MILES TO A FORK. KEEP THE LEFT FORK AND CONTINUE NORTHERLY FOR 5.6 MILES TO A FORK AND SIGN BALDY L.O. ROAD. TAKE THE RIGHT FORK AND GO NORTH AND EAST UP THE MOUNTAIN ROAD FOR 2.45 MILES TO A FORK AND SIGN BALDY L.O. KEEP THE RIGHT FORK AND GO 1.6 MILES TO A TURN AROUND AREA AND SIGN BALDY L.O. TRAIL NO 340. KEEP STRAIGHT AHEAD FOR 0.1 MILE TO THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL AND THE BEGINNING OF THE TRAIL. HERE PACK UP THE TRAIL NORTHEASTERLY APPROXIMATELY 1.5 TO 2 HOURS TO THE BALDY LOOKOUT AND THE STATION. THE STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BALDY 1940, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A BOULDER WHICH IS ABOUT 3 INCHES ABOVE THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. IT IS APPROXIMATELY 100 YARDS EAST OF THE CENTER OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER AND 30 FEET EAST-SOUTHEAST OF THE EAST EDGE OF A LARGE CIRCULAR ROCK CAIRN. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BALDY NO 1 1940, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK WHICH IS FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. IT IS 32.5 FEET EAST OF THE EAST EDGE OF A LARGE CIRCULAR ROCK CAIRN AND ABOUT THE SAME ELEVATION AS THE STATION. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BALDY NO 2 1940, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK WHICH IS FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. IT IS 107 FEET EAST OF THE EAST EDGE OF A LARGE CIRCULAR ROCK CAIRN AND ABOUT 7 FEET LOWER IN ELEVATION THAN THE STATION. NOTE--A DIFFERENCE WAS NOTED IN THE DISTANCE TO THE REFERENCE MARKS AND VERIFIED AT THIS TIME. THE DIRECTIONS COMPARED FAVORABLY WITH THE 1940 OBSERVATIONS. THE STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1992.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
