IT IS ON RICHARDS PEAK, THE HIGHEST PEAK IN THE VICINITY, 12.5 FEET S OF RICHARDS PEAK LOOKOUT. MARK IS A U.S.G.S. BENCH MARK AND IS SET IN BEDROCK. IT IS STAMPED RICHARDS. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS A STANDARD BRONZE DISK WEDGED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK, 1 FOOT S OF THE LOOKOUT STEPS. IT IS STAMPED RICHARDS NO. 1, 1940. U.S.G.S. REFERENCE MARK IS ABOUT 2 METERS LOWER THAN THE STATION AND IS SET IN BEDROCK WHICH LIES AT AN ANGLE OF ABOUT 45 DEG. THE DISK IS UNSTAMPED. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS ABOUT 4 MILES E OF THE STATION, 200 FEET W OF A N-S ROAD AT INDIAN PRAIRIE. IT IS ON A SMALL BENCH, 20 FEET E OF WHERE THE BENCH BREAKS OVER TO THE W, 250 FEET SW OF SIGN ON THE ROAD RICHARDS PK. 5 MILES, AND 15 FEET W OF TRAIL 179 TO RICHARDS PEAK. IT IS A STANDARD BRONZE DISK SET IN A BOULDER ABOUT 10 INCHES SQUARE AND IS FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. IT IS STAMPED RICHARDS 1940. THERE IS A WHITE REFERENCE POST 3 FEET S OF THE MARK. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE PLAINS RAILROAD DEPOT, GO W ON STATE HIGHWAY 3 FOR 0.2 MILE TO A GRAVEL ROAD TO THE N ON THE E SIDE OF THE SCHOOLHOUSE. TURN RIGHT (N) ON THIS ROAD AND FOLLOW MAIN ROAD FOR 6.9 MILES TO FORKS. TAKE LEFT FORK, STRAIGHT AHEAD (RIGHT FORK GOES TO BALDY MOUNTAIN), AND FOLLOW MAIN ROAD N FOR 1.1 MILES TO ANOTHER FORK. TAKE RIGHT FORK, MAIN ROAD, AND GO 16.55 MILES TO BIG SPRINGS CAMP (FOREST SERVICE PUBLIC CAMP). CONTINUE N ON MAIN ROAD FOR 3.65 MILES TO A WOOD BRIDGE JUST AFTER PASSING SEVERAL LOG CABINS. CONTINUE N ON MAIN ROAD FOR 5.75 MILES TO A SMALL OPEN FLAT AT SIGNS LITTLE INDIAN PRAIRIE AND RICHARDS PEAK 5 MILES ON THE W SIDE OF THE ROAD. RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1960 (OSR) STATION WAS RECOVERED AND ALL MARKS WERE FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION WITH THE EXCEPTION OF REFERENCE MARK 1. A NEW LOOKOUT HOUSE HAS BEEN BUILT AND THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF IT COVERS THE LOCATION OF REFERENCE MARK 1. A NEW REFERENCE MARK 3 WAS ESTABLISHED. A DIFFERENCE OF 0.079 METERS WAS NOTED IN THE MEASURED DISTANCE TO REFERENCE MARK 2. DUE TO THE NEW LOOKOUT HOUSE THE LINE TO MURR WAS OBSERVED ECCENTRIC. A NEW AND COMPLETE DESCRIPTION IS AS FOLLOWS-- STATION IS LOCATED IN THE LOLO NATIONAL FOREST, 4-3/4 MILES SOUTH AND 1 MILE WEST OF THE BEND RANGER STATION, 2-1/2 MILES WEST OF THOMPSON RIVER, AT THE SOUTH SIDE CENTER OF SECTION 16, T 24 N, R 27 W, IN AN OPEN AREA ON THE HIGHEST PART OF RICHARDS PK WHICH IS THE HIGHEST POINT IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY HAVING A GEOLOGICAL SURVEY ELEVATION OF 5771 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL, AND AT THE SITE OF RICHARDS PK LOOKOUT HOUSE. TO REACH FROM HAPPYS INN, ABOUT MIDWAY BETWEEN KALISPELL AND LIBBY ON U.S. HIGHWAY 2, GO SOUTHEAST ON U.S. HIGHWAY 2 FOR 9.2 MILES TO A CROSSROAD AT SIGN THOMPSON RIVER RD. Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1992.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
