DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1940 (ANS) STATION IS IN THE COEUR D ALENE NATIONAL FOREST. IT IS ABOUT 2-1/2 MILES E AND 1/2 MILE S OF MAGEE RANGER STATION AND 10-1/2 MILES W AND 12-1/2 MILES N OF PRICHARD. IT IS ON A LOW, BARE TOPPED HILL, KNOWN AS SPY GLASS PEAK, 15 FEET W OF A LOOKOUT HOUSE AND 40 PACES W OF A LOOKOUT TOWER. THE MARK PROJECTS 5 INCHES AND IS STAMPED SPY GLASS 1940. SURFACE, UNDERGROUND, REFERENCE (NO. 1 U.S.C. AND G.S.) AND AZIMUTH MARKS ARE STANDARD BRONZE DISKS SET IN CONCRETE, AS DESCRIBED IN NOTES 1A, 7A AND 11A. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS ABOUT 2 METERS LOWER THAN THE STATION ON THE S SIDE OF THE HILL. IT PROJECTS 7 INCHES AND IS STAMPED SPY GLASS NO. 1, 1940. REFERENCE MARK (U.S.G.S. NO. 1) IS A U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY REFERENCE MARK AT ABOUT THE SAME ELEVATION AS THE STATION, 35 FEET S OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. IT IS SET IN BEDROCK AND IS STAMPED SPY GLASS NO. 1, 1938. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS ABOUT 3.0 MILES NE OF THE STATION, IN A Y FORMED BY A LOOP IN THE ROAD AT THE NE END OF PACKSACK RIDGE. IT PROJECTS 6 INCHES AND IS STAMPED SPY GLASS 1940. THERE IS A WHITE REFERENCE POST 4 FEET E OF THE MARK. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THE SIGN PACKSACK RIDGE, TAKE RIGHT FORK AND GO NE FOR 0.8 MILE TO FORK AND SIGN DREXALL SPRING. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD FOR 2.0 MILES TO END OF ROAD AT THE NE END OF PACKSACK RIDGE. THE AZIMUTH MARK IS AT THE END OF THE ROAD. TO REACH THE STATION FROM MAGEE RANGER STATION, GO S ON MAIN-TRAVELED ROAD FOR 0.2 MILE TO FORKS AT THE BRIDGE OVER TRAIL CREEK. TAKE LEFT FORK (S) OVER BRIDGE, AND GO 0.15 MILE TO TRACK ROAD LEADING LEFT (E) AT SIGN SPY GLASS LOOKOUT TOWER 6 MILES. FOLLOW THIS ROAD E, UPHILL, FOR 4.8 MILES TO SIGN PACKSACK RIDGE. • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1992.
  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
