Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1939 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1939 (ANS) TWENTY-TWO MILES NORTH-NORTHWEST OF WHITEFISH, 7-1/2 MILES SOUTHWEST BY WEST OF THE POLEBRIDGE RANGER STATION, 7 MILES WEST OF THE MORAN RANGER STATION, 2 MILES NORTH OF THE COAL RIDGE LOOKOUT, AIRLINE DISTANCES, ON A HIGH WOODED RIDGE KNOWN LOCALLY AS COAL RIDGE. THE MARK IS 50.5 METERS NORTH-NORTHEAST OF THE HIGH POINT OF RIDGE, 10 FEET EAST-SOUTHEAST OF THE RIDGE CREST, 15 FEET LOWER IN ELEVATION THAN THE HIGHEST POINT, 2 FEET LOWER THAN RIDGE CREST, AND STAMPED MORAN 1939. THE OUTCROP PROJECTS 6 INCHES. ELEVATION OF THE STATION IS 7300 FEET, UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE DATA. TO REACH FROM COLUMBIA FALLS, WHICH IS 2 MILES NORTH OF U.S. HIGHWAY 2, GO NORTH ON THE MAIN ROAD UP THE WEST SIDE OF THE FLATHEAD RIVER FOR 33 MILES TO MORAN RANGER STATION. THE COAL RIDGE LOOKOUT TRAIL LEAVES THE ROAD AT THIS POINT. GO WEST UP THIS TRAIL FOR ABOUT 9 MILES TO A SADDLE IN THE MAIN DIVIDE ABOUT HALF WAY BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW LOOKOUT HOUSES, HERE TURN RIGHT AND CLIMB UP SHARP RIDGE TO A POINT ABOUT 200 YARDS FROM THE OLD LOOKOUT HOUSE, THEN TURN RIGHT ON A DIM TRAIL NORTHEAST AS PER SIGN NORTH PATROL POINT, AND FOLLOW THIS TRAIL FOR ABOUT 1.0 MILE TO HIGHEST POINT OF THE RIDGE AND THE STATION, WHICH IS 50.5 METERS NORTH-NORTHEAST. SURFACE AND REFERENCE MARKS ARE STANDARD BRONZE DISKS SET IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK AS DESCRIBED IN NOTES 2 AND 12A RESPECTIVELY. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS 15 FEET WEST BY WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE RIDGE CREST, 3-1/2 FEET LOWER IN ELEVATION, IN BEDROCK 8 INCHES BELOW SURFACE, 5 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION, AND IS STAMPED MORAN NO. 1 1939. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS 12 FEET EAST OF THE RIDGE CREST, 2 FEET LOWER THAN THE RIDGE CREST, 40 METERS TOWARD THE STATION FROM HIGH POINT OF THE RIDGE. THE MARK IS IN THE LONGITUDINAL CENTER OF A 15-FOOT OUTCROP RUNNING SOUTHEAST AND NORTHWEST IN A V DEPRESSION OF OUTCROP, 2-1/2 FEET HIGHER THAN STATION AND IS STAMPED MORAN NO. 2 1939. BENCH MARK L.O. IS DESIGNATED AS THE AZIMUTH.
01/01/1960 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1960 (OSR) STATION MARK AND REFERENCE MARK 2 WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. REFERENCE MARK 1 WAS SEARCHED FOR BUT COULD NOT BE FOUND. DUE TO THE TIGHT SCHEDULE AND THAT IT WAS A HELICOPTER STATION A REFERENCE MARK 3 WAS NOT ESTABLISHED. FOLLOWING IS A NEW AND COMPLETE DESCRIPTION. THE STATION IS ON A HIGH TIMBER COVERED NORTH-SOUTH RIDGE. IT IS ABOUT 22 MILES NORTH AND 3-1/2 MILES WEST OF WHITEFISH, 10 MILES SOUTH AND 2 MILES WEST OF THE FORD RANGER STATION, 6-1/4 MILES WEST AND 3-1/2 MILES SOUTH OF POLEBRIDGE AND NEAR THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF SECTION 3, R 22 W, T 34 N. ELEVATION 7,400 FEET. THIS STATION WAS REACHED BY HELICOPTER. IT CAN ALSO BE REACHED BY TRUCK AND TRAIL FROM THE BIG CR RANGER STATION 16 MILES NORTH OF COLUMBIA FALLS, GO NORTHWEST ALONG LANGFORD CREEK FOR ABOUT 5 MILES TO CYCLONE PARK, THEN WESTERLY ALONG COAL CREEK FOR ABOUT 5 MILES TO TRAIL NUMBER 44, FOLLOW TRAIL NUMBER 44, WESTERLY ALONG COAL CREEK FOR ABOUT 3-1/2 MILES TO TRAIL NUMBER 56, TAKE THE RIGHT TRAIL, TRAIL NUMBER 56, NORTHERLY FOR ABOUT 2 MILES TO THE COAL RIDGE LOOKOUT, THEN FOLLOW A TRAIL NORTH-NORTHEAST FOR ABOUT 1 MILE TO THE HIGHEST POINT, CONTINUE NORTH, FOR ABOUT 50 YARDS TO A TRIANGLE BLAZED TREE AND STATION. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED MORAN 1939, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A 4 X 3 FOOT OUTCROPPING BEDROCK PROJECTING 4 INCHES. IT IS 29 FEET NORTH-NORTHEAST OF A 15 INCH PINE TREE WITH A TRIANGLE BLAZE ON THE NORTH SIDE, 12 FEET EAST OF THE CENTER OF THE RIDGE AND ABOUT 150 FEET NORTH AND 20 FEET LOWER THAN THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE RIDGE. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED MORAN NO 2 1939, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. IT IS 19 FEET EAST OF THE CENTER OF THE RIDGE AND 15 FEET EAST-SOUTHEAST OF THE TRIANGLE BLAZED TREE. IT IS ABOUT 1 FOOT HIGHER THAN THE STATION MARK. NO SUITABLE PLACE FOR AN AZIMUTH MARK.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1992.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
