DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1959 (OSR) STATION IS LOCATED NEAR THE CENTER OF THE BASE OF THE ASHLEY MTN. LOOKOUT TOWER, WHICH IS ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF ASHLEY MOUNTAIN (A PROMINENT HEAVILY TIMBERED MOUNTAIN) ABOUT 18-1/2 MILES WEST AND 6 MILES NORTH OF KALISPELL, 17 MILES WEST AND 9 MILES SOUTH OF WHITEFISH AND 7 MILES SOUTH OF THE STAR MEADOWS RANGER STATION, IN THE NORTHWEST 1/4 OF SECTION 18, T 29 N, R 24 W. REACHED FROM THE INTERSECTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 2 AND MAIN STREET IN KALISPELL, BY GOING WESTERLY ON HIGHWAY 2 FOR 0.7 MILES TO CROSSROADS AT THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE FAIRGROUNDS, TURN RIGHT AND FOLLOW MACADAM ROAD, NORTH, WEST AND NORTH, FOR 10.35 MILES TO CROSSROADS AND END OF MACADAM, CONTINUE NORTH ON GRAVEL ROAD FOR 3.8 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD LEFT, TURN LEFT FOR 1.25 MILES TO FORKS, TAKE LEFT FORK FOR 0.1 MILE TO FORKS TAKE RIGHT FORK FOR 9.25 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD RIGHT AT THE NORTH END OF TALLY LAKE AND A GROUP OF SIGNS ON THE LEFT, CONTINUE ON MAIN GRAVEL ROAD FOR 5.2 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD LEFT, CONTINUE ON MAIN ROAD FOR 3.6 MILES TO A SIDE ROAD LEFT AT SIGN STAR MEADOWS RANCH, TURN LEFT AND FOLLOW DIRT ROAD THROUGH PASTURE FOR 1.65 MILES TO FORKS, TAKE LEFT FORK FOR 0.5 MILE TO FORKS, TAKE RIGHT FORK AS PER SIGN ASHLEY L.O.T. 4-1/2 FOR 1.6 MILES TO END OF TRUCK TRAVEL AT OLD CABIN. AT THE EAST SIDE OF THE CABIN THERE IS A SIGN TRAIL 161-ASHLEY L.O. 4, FOLLOW TRAIL 161 SOUTHERLY TO THE LOOKOUT TOWER AND STATION. ABOUT A 3 HOUR PACK. DUE TO THICK AND HIGH TIMBER A 4-FOOT STAND WAS OCCUPIED WITHIN THE CABIN OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. THE TOWER ITSELF IS 50 FEET HIGH TO THE FLOOR OF THE CABIN. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED ASHLEY 1959, BRAZED TO THE TOP OF A 2-INCH PIPE PROJECTING 14 INCHES. IT IS 16.3 FEET WEST-NORTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER, 15.4 FEET SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF THE NORTHEAST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER AND 10 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE SOUTHEAST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED ASHLEY NO 1 1959, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE CONCRETE FOUNDATION OF THE NORTHEAST LEG OF THE TOWER. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED ASHLEY NO 2 1959, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE CONCRETE FOUNDATION OF THE SOUTHWEST LEG OF THE TOWER. NO SUITABLE PLACE FOR AN AZIMUTH MARK.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1992.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
