DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1939 (ANS) IN THE BLACKFEET NATIONAL FOREST ON HORNET PEAK, 33 FEET WEST OF THE CENTER OF THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE LOOKOUT HOUSE. THE MARK PROJECTS ABOUT 1 FOOT ABOVE THE GROUND, AND IS STAMPED HORNET 1939. THE BAROMETRIC ELEVATION IS 7090 FEET. TO REACH FROM COLUMBIA FALLS, GO VIA THE MAIN U.S. FOREST SERVICE ROAD UP THE WEST SIDE OF THE FLATHEAD RIVER, VIA THE BIG CREEK AND MORAN RANGER STATIONS TO THE FORD RANGER STATION. THE FORD RANGER STATION IS 13 MILES NORTH FROM THE MORAN RANGER STATION. FROM THE FORD RANGER STATION TAKE TRAIL 11 WEST, FOR 5 MILES TO FORKS IN THE TRAIL AND A SIGN READING HORNET L.O. TAKE THE RIGHT HAND FORK (TRAIL 10) UPHILL FOR 2-3/4 MILES TO FORKS IN THE TRAIL, KEEP LEFT FORK 1/4 MILE TO THE TOP OF THE HILL AND THE STATION. A 3-1/2-HOUR HORSE PACK. SURFACE, REFERENCE AND AZIMUTH MARKS ARE STANDARD BRONZE DISKS SET IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK AS DESCRIBED IN NOTES 2, 12A AND 12A RESPECTIVELY. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 PROJECTS 1 FOOT ABOVE THE GROUND AND IS ABOUT 1 FOOT HIGHER THAN STATION MARK, ABOUT 23 FEET WEST-SOUTHWEST FROM THE CENTER OF THE LOOKOUT HOUSE, AND IS STAMPED HORNET NO. 1 1939. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2 IS SET IN A DEPRESSION ABOUT 4 INCHES LOWER THAN TOP OF THE OUTCROP. OUTCROP IS ABOUT 60 FEET SOUTHWEST OF LOOKOUT HOUSE, ABOUT 1-1/2 FEET BY 3 FEET IN SHAPE AND PROJECTS 1 FOOT ABOVE THE GROUND AND IS ABOUT 10 FEET LOWER THAN STATION. THE MARK IS STAMPED HORNET NO. 2 1939. AZIMUTH MARK IS ABOUT 1/4 MILE SOUTHEAST OF THE STATION ON A CREST OF THE SOUTH SLOPE OF THE RIDGE LEADING TO THE STATION. THE MARK IS 8 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE TRAIL, (TRAIL 10) 13 FEET EAST-NORTHEAST FROM A LARGE PINE TREE WITH A TRIANGULAR BLAZE AND 12 FEET SOUTHEAST FROM A SMALL PINE TREE WITH A TRIANGULAR BLAZE. THE MARK IS ABOUT 400 FEET LOWER THAN STATION AND IS STAMPED HORNET 1939.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1960 (OSR) STATION AND ALL MARKS WERE RECOVERED AND FOUND IN GOOD CONDITION. FOLLOWING IS A NEW AND COMPLETE DESCRIPTION. STATION IS ON THE HIGHEST POINT OF HORNET MOUNTAIN, 11 MILES WEST AND 6 MILES NORTH OF POLEBRIDGE, 8 MILES EAST OF THE LINCLON-FLATHEAD COUNTY LINE, 6 MILES WEST OF THE FORD RANGER STATION AND IS NEAR THE HORNET MTN LOOKOUT HOUSE. (ELEVATION 7,090 FEET). THIS STATION WAS REACHED BY HELICOPTER. IT CAN ALSO BE REACHED BY TRUCK AND TRAIL FROM THE FORD RANGER STATION ABOUT 6 MILES NORTHWEST OF POLEBRIDGE, FOLLOW TRAIL NUMBER 11 FOR ABOUT 4-1/2 MILES TO A FORK WITH TRAIL NUMBER 10, TAKE TRAIL NUMBER 10 FOR ABOUT 2 MILES TO THE TOP OF MOUNTAIN, LOOKOUT HOUSE AND STATION. TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM THE STATION FOLLOW TRAIL NUMBER 10 SOUTHEAST FOR ABOUT 1/4 MILE TO THE AZIMUTH MARK ON THE RIGHT AT A TRIANGLE BLAZED TREE. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED HORNET 1939, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A 2 X 2 FOOT BOULDER PROJECTING 18 INCHES. IT IS 33 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF THE LOOKOUT HOUSE AND 26 FEET WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE LOOKOUT HOUSE. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED HORNET NO 1 1939, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A 3 X 2 FOOT BOULDER PROJECTING 12 INCHES. IT IS 15 FEET WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE LOOKOUT HOUSE. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED HORNET NO 2 1939, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A 4 X 3 FOOT ROCK OUTCROPP FLUSH WITH THE GROUND SURFACE. IT IS 38 FEET SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE LOOKOUT HOUSE AND ABOUT 5 FEET LOWER THAN THE STATION. AZIMUTH MARK IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED HORNET 1939, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN 2 X 1 FOOT BOULDER PROJECTING 4 INCHES. IT IS 13 FEET EAST-NORTHEAST OF A 36 INCH PINE TREE WITH A TRIANGLE BLAZE ON THE EAST SIDE, 12 FEET SOUTHEAST OF AN 8 INCH PINE TREE WITH A TRIANGLE BLAZE ON THE EAST SIDE AND 8 FEET SOUTHWEST OF TRAIL NUMBER 10.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1992.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
