DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1959 (OSR) STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 13 MILES WEST AND 12 MILES NORTH OF WHITEFISH, 3-3/4 MILES NORTHWEST OF THE STILLWATER RANGER STATION, 1 MILE SOUTHWEST OF U.S. HIGHWAY 93, BETWEEN THE UPPER STILLWATER AND DOG LAKES, ON DOG MOUNTAIN AT THE SITE OF THE DOG MTN LOOKOUT TOWER AND IN THE NORTH CENTRAL PORTION OF SECTION 31, T 33 N, R 23 W. TO REACH FROM THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK IN WHITEFISH, GO WEST AND NORTHWEST ON U.S. HIGHWAY 93 FOR 17.3 MILES TO THE MONTANA STATE FORESTRY DEPARTMENT HEADQUARTERS, STILLWATER DISTRICT, ON THE LEFT. CONTINUE NORTHWEST ON HIGHWAY FOR 0.8 MILE TO A SIDE ROAD LEFT AT SIGN OLNEY MERCHANTILE CO. CONTINUE ON HIGHWAY FOR 0.2 MILE TO A SIDE ROAD LEFT. (TO REACH THE AZIMUTH MARK FROM HERE, CONTINUE ON HIGHWAY NORTHWEST FOR 3.0 MILES TO A BARE ROCK BLUFF AND THE MARK ON THE RIGHT JUST BEFORE REACHING A FARM ROAD LEFT.) TURN LEFT AND FOLLOW WOODS ROAD (NO. 255) SOUTHWEST FOR 0.15 MILE TO A T-INTERSECTION AT A GARBAGE DUMP. TURN RIGHT AND FOLLOW WOODS ROAD NORTHWESTERLY FOR 0.25 MILE TO A FORK. TAKE THE LEFT FORK AND CONTINUE FOR 0.5 MILE TO A FORK. TAKE THE LEFT FORK AND GO WEST FOR 0.2 MILE TO A FORK IMMEDIATELY BEYOND A SMALL WOODEN BRIDGE. TAKE THE RIGHT FORK AND CONTINUE NORTHWESTERLY ON WOODS ROAD FOR 1.6 MILES TO A FORK. TAKE THE RIGHT FORK (ROAD NO. 255A) FOR 0.1 MILE TO A FORK. TAKE THE LEFT FORK (ROAD NO. 255A) AND CONTINUE NORTHWESTERLY ON WOODS ROAD FOR 0.65 MILE TO THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL AT A BROKEN DOWN WOODEN BRIDGE. PACK SOUTHWESTERLY FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES TO THE LOOKOUT TOWER AT THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE HILL AND THE STATION AS DESCRIBED. STATION MARK IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED DOG 1959, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK FLUSH WITH THE SURROUNDING SURFACE. IT IS 53 FEET EAST OF THE NORTHEAST LEG OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER. REFERENCE MARK 1 IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED DOG NO 1 1959, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK PROJECTING ABOUT 18 INCHES. IT IS 50 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER LEG AND ABOUT 1 FOOT HIGHER THAN THE STATION MARK. REFERENCE MARK 2 IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED DOG NO 2 1959, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK PROJECTING ABOUT 12 INCHES. IT IS 34 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER LEG AND AT THE APPARENT HIGHEST PART OF THE HILL. THE DISTANCE BETWEEN REFERENCE MARKS 1 AND 2 IS 18.290 METERS OR 60.01 FEET. AZIMUTH MARK IS A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED DOG 1959, CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN BEDROCK AT THE BASE OF A ROCK BLUFF. IT IS 352 FEET SOUTHEAST OF THE INTERSECTION OF THE CENTER LINES OF THE HIGHWAY AND A FARM ROAD LEADING SOUTHWEST, 45 FEET SOUTHEAST OF A 4 INCH WHITE POST (NO. 170), 40 FEET NORTHEAST OF THE HIGHWAY CENTER AND ABOUT 3 FEET HIGHER THAN THE HIGHWAY SURFACE. A TRAVERSE CONNECTION WAS MADE TO THE DETERMINED CENTER OF THE LOOKOUT TOWER, THE DISTANCE BEING AS SHOWN ABOVE.

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in July 1992.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.)
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
