Found the Triangulation Station and both RMs today while hiking to the summit of Tiffany Mtn. All three are in good condition in firm settings. The summit is 2.1 miles from Freezeout Pass on NFS Rd #39 via maintained trail. NFS Rd #37 to the south provides access to Winthrop or Conconully. Views from the summit extend in every direction.

Found BM as listed. Would have liked to stay longer but we were getting eaten alive by bugs. Great day to be out of the heat of the valley.

Marvin Gardens and the Hooligals

Not to far from another benchmark, was wondering why so close together until I got back home and read about them.

We saw a couple of marmots from here. What a unique little mammal! What a view this benchmark provides.

Absolutely stunning 360 degree view from this station. Approached from Withrop via Chewuch Road, FS37 and FS39, then hiked Freezeout Ridge trail to Tiffay Summit trail. Lookout is long gone, but noticed quite a few nails and remnants about.

Documented History (by the NGS)

1/1/1924 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1924 ON THE HIGHER AND MORE SOUTHERN SUMMIT OF TIFFANY MOUNTAIN, A ROUND, BARE, DOUBLE - TOPPED MOUNTAIN IN THE MAIN RANGE BETWEEN THE METHOW AND OKANOGAN RIVERS. THE STATION IS ABOUT 22 MILES NORTHEAST OF WINTHROP, EASHINGTON, ABOUT 20 MILES SOUTHWEST OF LOOMIS, WASHINGTON, AND ABOUT 12 MILES NORTHWEST OF CONCONULLY, WASHINGTON. IT MAY BE CONVENIENTLY APPROACHED FROM ANY OF THESE PLACES. IN 1924 THE U.S. COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY ESTABLISHED A FIRST ORDER TRIANGULATION STATION 2.890 METERS FROM THE ORIGINAL STATION IN BEARING 88 DEGREES 03 MINUTES. THE ISC AND GS STATION MARK IS A STANDARD BRONZE - DISK STATION MARK WEDGED IN A DRILL HOLE IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK. A STANDARD USC AND GS BRONZE - DISK REFERENCE MARK, WITH THE ARROW POINTING TOWARD THE STATION, IS WEDGED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A BOULDER 9.321 METERS FROM THE USC AND GS STATION IN BEARING 311 DEGREES 14 MINUTES 42 SECONDS. A LIKE MARK SET IN THE SAME MANNER IS 8.018 METERS FROM THE USC AND GS STATION IN BEARING 24 DEGREES 43 MINUTES 34 SECONDS.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in December 1991.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.) The vertical order pertains to the superseded datum.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
