01/01/1905 by IBC (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARY COMMISSION 1905 (JJM) THE GENERAL TYPE OF ALUMINUM - BRONZE MONUMENTS SET IN 1904-09 ARE HOLLOW SHAFTS SET IN A CONCRETE BASE. THEY WERE MADE OF SECTIONAL DESIGN TO FACILITATE TRANSPORTATION TO THEIR SITES IN THE RUGGED MOUNTAIN COUNTRY BY PACK HORSES AND BY BACK - PACKING BY MEN. THE INSCRIPTIONS ON THE MONUMENTS ARE OF TWO DIFFERENT WORDINGS. ON THOSE SET WEST OF THE SUMMIT OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS. CONSECUTIVE NUMBERS 2 TO 272. THE INSCRIPTIONS ARE CAST IN SMALL RAISED LETTERS IN HORIZONTAL LINES ACROSS THE MIDDLE SECTION OF THE SHAFT AND ARE AS FOLLOWS--ON THE NORTH FACE,---CANADA---, ON THE SOUTH FACE ---UNITED STATES---, ON THE EAST FACE,---TREATY OF 1846, LINE ESTABLISHED 1857-1861, SURVEYED AND MARKED 1903-1907---. THE WEST FACE IS BLANK EXCEPT FOR THE NUMBER OF THE MONUMENT, WHICH IS IN RAISED FIGURES ON A PLATE THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE TOP SECTION OF THE SHAFT BY MEANS OF A GROOVED SLOT DESIGNED FOR THAT PURPOSE. ON THOSE SET EAST OF THE SUMMIT OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS, CONSECUTIVE NUMBERS 273 TO 302, THE INSCRIPTIONS ARE CAST IN LARGE RAISED LETTERS, IN VERTICAL LINES READING UPWARD, ON THE TOP SECTION OF THE SHAFT AND ARE AS FOLLOWS--ON THE NORTH FACE---CANADA---, ON THE SOUTH FACE ---UNITED STATES---, ON THE EAST FACE---TREATY OF 1908---, ON THE WEST FACE---CONVENTION OF 1918---. ON THE WEST FACE, THE NUMBER OF THE MONUMENT IS OUTLINED BY DRILL HOLES.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in December 1991. No horizontal observational check was made to the station.
  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
