Found it Mar 12 2011 visiting PA and didn't know what it was. Researching it's origin I found this site. I think I'm gonna have to start geocaching now!

Found it with my dad while visiting Ediz Hook.

Found it while touring the hook.

Had work in PA last night and took some time to geocache and sight see. Never would have expected to stumble upon this BM. What a sweet treat. Found in good shape with exception of scarring in center.

Recovered the station mark in good condition at the given coordinates.
(Also recovered Reference Mark number 3 (RM3) and found the stem for Reference Mark number 4 (RM4).

The 1988 station mark description for EDIZ 2 is good except for the following:

  • The name of the mill is Nippon Paper instead of Crown-Zellerbach.

  • The “power line pole”, “parking sign” and witness post no longer exist.

  • The boulder adjacent to the mark (west of the mark) is marked with a white spray-painted triangle on its south face.

Found RM3 at the location given by the box score. Some of the stamping is just barely decipherable.

Found RM4’s broken stem remnant at the location given by the box score. RM4’s boulder is marked with a white and green spray-painted “target” of 3 concentric circles and a spot in the middle on the southern/top corner of the boulder.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in December 1991. No horizontal observational check was made to the station.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.) The vertical order pertains to the superseded datum.
  • The X, Y, and Z were computed from the position and the ellipsoidal ht.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The ellipsoidal height was determined by GPS observations and is referenced to NAD 83.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
