Recovered the mark in good condition at the coordinates in the datasheet.

Additions to the 1987 and 1989 descriptions are as follows:

  • Power pole number 125 is also labeled as “C 414”

  • The mark is 3.7 feet southeast from the center of a 2 foot wide iron drain grate that is in the road at the curb.

  • The mark is 3.2 feet southwest from the road curb.

  • The mark is 2.4 feet northwest of an orange fiberglass witness post and 3.8 feet east of another orange fiberglass witness post that is broken off at the base.

  • The PVC pipe is set in a 2 foot x 2 foot section of concrete that protrudes 1 inch above the ground.

This photo shows the PVC pipe/cap over the mark and the grate and the hydrant and the two witness posts. The witness post that is broken at the base is in the center of the photo.

DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1987 (MRM) THE STATION WAS RECOVERED AT THIS DATE. THE STATION IS LOCATED AT PORT ANGELES. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION OF LINCOLN STREET AND FRONT STREET IN PORT ANGELES, GO WEST FOR 0.6 KM (0.4 MI) ON FRONT STREET TO A FORK. FOLLOW THE RIGHT FORK AND GO WEST FOR 1.05 KM (0.65 MI) ON MARINE DRIVE TO A FIRE HYDRANT AND POWER POLE NUMBER 125 ON THE RIGHT AND THE STATION. THE STATION IS A STANDARD NOS DISK STAMPED---4090A 1981---, CRIMPED TO THE TOP OF A GALVANIZED STEEL ROD ENCASED IN A 4-INCH PVC PIPE. LOCATED 13.6 METERS (44.5 FT) SOUTH-SOUTHWEST FROM THE SOUTHWEST RAIL OF RAILROAD, 2.6 METERS (8.5 FT) EAST-SOUTHEAST FROM A FIRE HYDRANT AND 2.3 METERS (7.5 FT) WEST-NORTHWEST FROM POWER POLE NUMBER 125 WITH A WITNESS POST. WASHINGTON DOT, FAA, TIDE STATIONS - 1987. THIS STATION SUITABLE FOR GPS SURVEYS. DESCRIBED BY D.A. WEGENAST.

RECOVERY NOTE BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1989 THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 41.8 KM (26.0 MI) SOUTH OF VICTORIA, 27.4 KM (17.0 MI) WEST OF SEQUIM, 24.1 KM (15.0 MI) EAST OF JOYCE AND AT PORT ANGELES. TO REACH FROM THE INTERSECTION OF LINCOLN STREET AND FRONT STREET IN PORT ANGELES, GO WEST ON FRONT STREET FOR 0.64 KM (0.40 MI) TO A FORK. TAKE THE RIGHT FORK AND CONTINUE WESTERLY ON MARINE DRIVE FOR 1.04 KM (0.65 MI) TO A FIRE HYDRANT, POWER LINE POLE NUMBER 125 AND THE STATION. THE MARK IS FASTENED TO THE TOP OF A COPPER CLAD STEEL ROAD SET IN A 4-INCH PLASTIC PIPE WITH A CAP. IT IS 2.6 M (8.5 FT) EAST-SOUTHEAST OF A FIRE HYDRANT AND 2.3 M (7.5 FT) WEST-NORTHWEST OF A POWER LINE POLE NUMBER 125 THAT HAS A WITNESS SIGN ATTACHED TO IT.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by GPS observations and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in May 1991.
  • The NAVD 88 height was computed by applying the VERTCON shift value to the NGVD 29 height (displayed under SUPERSEDED SURVEY CONTROL.) The vertical order pertains to the superseded datum.
  • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 1118 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
  • The X, Y, and Z were computed from the position and the ellipsoidal ht.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The ellipsoidal height was determined by GPS observations and is referenced to NAD 83.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
