4th Benchmark of the day. Under about two feet of snow, a little crust of ice directly on top of the Benchmark. Found it around 1510.

Found as described. Recovery report submitted to the NGS within the past year by other.

A great find on Christmas Eve following a visit to the nearby BX complex with my father - this is my 600th benchmark recovery!

Located on Elmendorf Air Force Base, Anchorage AK. At time of recovery only an icy 1" crust of snow covered the mark. Weather forecasters are calling for more than a half-foot of snow to fall in the next 24 hours...

Note the 4 concrete pillars used to protect the area of the station from drag mowers etc, as well as the unique BROWN carsonite witness post with the 'rare' US Army Corps of Engineers witness post decal (on Elmendorf AFB brown is used for 'tactical' purposes on many objects otherwise left alone on the civilian side of the fence - galvanized steel signposts are sheathed in a brown cover, and the back of roadsigns are sheeted with a dark brown vinyl rather than left 'natural' aluminum)

Looking west across station down Provider Drive; stoplight approximately 250 yards away is the intersection with road leading north to the exchange complex and Fort Richardson. Note the mark's position relative to the power poles here.

Found as previously described. Previous coords by li1gray were spot on.

I was driving down the road the other day coming home from work finally spotted this BM. It is in very good shape. It is on the Southside of the road surrounded by 4 poles. It was about 100 feet off what the coordinates show. It is about 1/2 way down the road from the BX entrance road and the Old Hospital housing entrance. I didn't let the GPS avg very long but it is easy enough to find this one.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
