While visitng some friends in Hawai'i, Moonlight Madness and myself attempted to visit as many wonderous locations as we were able in the time we had available. The 'Big Island' of Hawai'i (in the state of Hawai'i), being home to 11 of the 13 documented climates in the world, certainly offered more than we could absorb during this trip alone. We very much enjoyed everything we were able to experience while here and are already planning a second visit to pick up where we left off this time...

Found this Benchmark to be in great condition while exploring Volacoes National park.

Aloha and Mahalo!

Together with Silas07 found this Benchmark fortuitously

We went for a nice Christmas eve hike to here from the military camp. Odd the way they mounted this!

We have stayed in Volcano House a couple of times but that was pre-geocaching. I finally got a chance to view this interesting mark on a chilly rainy day up on the mountain while we were staying at KMC. Mark in good condition as described.

Talk about an easy find. First Benchmark.

Very nice benchmark. I like benchmarks that get high style marks. Nice story included in the Recovery Notes.

Found at the end of a hike through the craters. Had to climb up on the object to find it.

Found this benchmark accidentally while reviewing the plaque of the old "Observatory" for possibly Waymarking this site. (Not able as this was not an Astronomical Observatory)

We were on a family vacation and we just stumbled upon it.

Recovered with TrekkinD. Looks like it is in pretty good condition, but hard to see well due to its setting. (See TrekkinD's pictures.)

Make sure to check out the awesome views of the caldera from here. Missed this one the first time due to the view! :-)

Documented History (by the NGS)

01/01/1920 by USGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 1920 IN SOUTHEAST HAWAII, AT THE HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY, KILAUEA VOLCANO, IN THE CENTER OF THE TOP OF THE CONCRETE PIER PROJECTING UP THROUGH THE FLOOR OF THE FRONT PORCH OF THE OBSERVATORY BUILDING. MARK, A BRONZE TABLET CEMENTED IN THE CONCRETE.
01/01/1967 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1967 (DMW) STATION MARK WAS RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION, HOWEVER THE OBSERVATORY BUILDING MENTIONED IN ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THE STATION NOW SETS IN LAWN AREA ON WEST SIDE OF THE VOLCANO HOUSE HOTEL, ABOUT 500 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE PARK HEADQUARTERS BUILDING. STATION MARK IS A U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DISK, STAMPED 3979, SET IN THE TOP OF AN 18-INCH-SQUARE CONCRETE MONUMENT 7 FEET TALL AND WITH 4 VANES AT THE BOTTOM. IT IS 27 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE HOTEL WALL, OPPOSITE THE POINT WHERE A GLASSED-IN WALKWAY BEGINS, AND IS AT THE BASE OF A LAWN TERRACE.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in December 1998. The horizontal coordinates are valid at the epoch date displayed above. The epoch date for horizontal control is a decimal equivalence of Year/Month/Day.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling. The vertical network tie was performed by a horz. field party for horz. obs reductions. Reset procedures were used to establish the elevation.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
