photoRef mark #2

As noted in the below Description – The disc at the top most people claim as the find is really Reference Mark No 2, the Azimuth Mark is flush set in bedrock at the top of a rocky divide, at the bottom perhaps… I’de be interested to see if anyone has found that marker – I’ll ask a park ranger next time.
There is a pretty detailed log from 8/14/06

photoMarker #2 at the top

This disk is NOT the benchmark" Enchanted Rock" BN0699 which is a triangulation statio and would have a triangle on it. This is just the Azimuth marker associated with it. Sadly the mark has been removed.

Visiting relatives in the area and they strongly suggested that we come out to Enchanted Rock. Not only that, they came out with us and we made a whole morning of it. The hike up to the top was easier than it looked like it was going to be and we managed to get a whole lot of photos, get this benchmark, the virtual, and the earthcache that was up here. All in all, a very successful outing.

Climbing to the top of Enchanted Rock on a hot summer day. Got the virtual geocache, the earthcache, and decided to do the Benchmark too.

Out grabbing the virtual associated with this cache.

As a geodesy technician I am always on the lookout for those marks :)

Found along with a couple of geocaches spring break weekend with the family.

I had no clue what this was when I found it while visting Enchanted Rock on my birthday at the "Enchanted Rock Star Festival". I have just started geocaching and have been looking around on the website when I found this part. I am so happy to finally discover what the disk was. Always good to learn something new :)

It was perfect weather for a trip to the top of a Enchanted Rock and finding this benchmark made it even better! Larry and Wesley and three of the grand kids made it to the top!

Always good to find another benchmark in my geocaching endeavors. I was working some D/T ratings with Scooterino around Enchanted Rock and then climbed tot he top to find a couple of other caches and came across this benchmark.

TFTB I climbed Enchanted Rock looking for the Virtual and Earthcache Geocaches. The view up here is fantastic for 360 degrees. It was a beautiful day to for the walk to the top and a journey around the base looking for other geocaches. ??

Second time coming to Enchanted Rock but first time climbing the dome! So pretty up here!!

Lots of visitors milling about. I think I was the only one that knew this was here. Thanks

We found this one while climbing the dome with the cub scouts. j2dad had to explain to me what it was.

We were here with a bunch of cub scouts, and as I was trying to get the info for the co-located virtual cache, they were standing on the marker proclaiming it the highest point of the rock.

Found this one when on top of the "Rock"

This was worth the July heat! This is my first!!!

It was a beautiful day for a hike to the top. The breeze kept it cool. The benchmark looks to be in pretty good condition.

Found after climbing to the summit today.

Forgot to log this way back when (it's now 2/27/2014) was flipping through my photo's on geocaching.com and sure enough there it was.

I have found this benchmark many times over the years, but only figured out how to log it today! I love hiking up to the top of E-Rock. It's great practice for backpacking trips, taking a full pack to the top, then doing some primitive camping on the other side of the dome. Now that I know where to log these, I'll start looking for more! :)

Beautiful day to be out here today. A bit of rain as I was coming into the park, but it let up for my hike. Found the benchmark and took a photo to prove I made it to the top. I'll have to come back on a sunny day as I would guess the view would be even better.

Great hike!

After finding the official TxGCC11 cache, I decided to hike to the top of Enchanted Rock, again, after hiking to the summit and finding the marker in 1987. I was much younger, then, and after having a birthday four days ago, I needed to see if I still had the mettle. Done!

Found it while backpacking with Boy Scout Troop 268!

My first Texas Benchmark!

Took my girlfriend to Enchanted Rock to hike to the top for my second time. I didn't find the benchmark the first time so I brought a GPS with me this time and found it. I also didn't realize I could log these too on this site which is cool. So this begins my hunt for benchmarks.

Looks like someone tried to steal this one or vandalize it.

I have already logged this one 4 years ago. But came back today at the end of the Enchanted Rock Extreme Duathlon. We ran 5 miles on the loop trail, bike 16 miles to highway 16 and back and finished with a 1.2 mile run up the rock. The finish flag was situating on top of the benchmark!

When I heard that my daughter wanted to go to Enchanted Rock for the last sunrise of the year I was all over it since I had 3 caches on my D/T chart I had been waiting to get. We got up at 0330 and was gone from the house by 0430...by 0615 we were at the park, paid our dues, and parked. We hiked up to the top of the dome as a family and got them all set up on their blanket before sunrise...then I took off on a beeline for Clatmandu straight down the steep side of the rock. After this cache went on to get To Boldly Go..... then straight back up the rock for the virtual and earthcache and link back up with the family to come home. I loved seeing the marker up there and made sure to take some photos. Truly awesome to have a virtual there with the survey disk!! Stopped off for the Enchanted Rock Vista and some more pics and stopped at Old German Bakery & Restaurant one the way back through town for breakfast before the drive back to SATX. It was a great trip!

Found while hiking and geocaching with the family in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area.

Found with my dad while visiting Enchanted Rock.

Found while hiking and caching on Enchanted Rock with my family. The first benchmark that I have found that is listed here.
#1, 1st Benchmark of the day. (1112212225Z)

Found while Caching in Enchanted Rock State park.

Found while working on the virtual cache.

We found this one a long time ago, just forgot to log it.

Found while hiking with the wife and son! Mark is in very rough shape but still readable!

Found Bench mark #2 as #1 appears to be missing and for some time according to the logs. We were grabbing the Earth, Virtual and TX State Challenge caches at ER SP on a very hot morning at 100 degrees.

At the time, I didn't even realize you could log these. But I do now. We found this when we stopped for the TX State Park Geocache Challenge. A fun climb for the kiddos as you can see from the attached picture.

Found this benchmark while working on the geocaches. It really is a wonderful view from all directions.

Found this benchmark while doing the Enchanted Rock Earthcache. It is a bit worn but is still there.

Found disk and another marker while doing the Enchanted Rock earthcache and virtual geocaches. Great views from up here.

The disk at the top of Enchanted Rock is NOT the station -- it is CV3929 Enchanted Rock RM2. We DID find that. We DID NOT find the station itself, which is a stem only in a hole about 10 yards away. :( Will look for the station itself on our next visit.

Saw it while hiking.

Found this marker when we hiked up the hill for the virtual and the Earthcache there.

Found this one after making the climb to the top. BM shows sign of wear.

Found it on our way to explore the cave!

Easy find.

Found, present but well worn from foot traffic

Great Hike up the hill with the family.

Found this along with one of our first geocaching finds. It was blazing hot that day, but still lots of fun.

What a great hike up this Enchanted Rock, it has an enchanting view as well. The top was our first stop, after achieving that feat, we hiked a mere 12 more miles caching and seeing the park. Great day, great weather, fun, fun, fun!

Found this one while out caching with BoiseBeaker and the family. What a great hike to this one....I huffed and puffed all the way! Beautiful view.

Found this marker a few years ago, while climbing on top of Enchanted Rock in TX, but looked it up today and thought I would log it. Although the elevation is 1825' the climb is only a mere 425', with the marker being .6 mile from the parking lot. I have included a photo of the marker in my log. Good Caching!

My family and I love this area. We like to hike up the front and down the back side.

Yep, still there! Actually, it is in pretty good shape. The only two things making this one difficult is that you have to climb Enchanted Rock (puff! wheez! puff! puff!), and the guy who had his foot on the BM for a couple of minutes before Tygress figured it out . . . (no, it WASN'T me!)

This is my first ever Benchmark! I've been in the caching game a while and I never scored a benchmark until now. It occurred to me that this was a two-fer (this is also a Virtual Cache; Waypoint GC3120) so I snagged it!

little marked up, but the disc is still there. great view. also known as virtual geocache GC3120, so be sure to log that too!

I found this one when chasing a virtual geocache GC3120. Was a hot day and beautiful and sunny and this was a personal challenge for me as I was recovering from stomach surgery and it was my 60th birthday. This was the first benchmark I ever found.

1st benchmark for our family, but 2nd visit to Enchanted Rock for my husband. Our family loved the hike up to the top, we were rewarded with a very nice view and much needed breeze at the top. Kids thought it was cool that the disk was older than their dad. Ha Ha!!!

SkiDeLuca :)

Finally made it back to Enchanted Rock, after 30 years. Gee, looks the same. Stopped there on the way to Austin with my wife. It was a clear but very hot day and the view was nothing short of spectacular. I posted a note previously stating that the benchmark photos people have been submitting are of Reference Mark #2, not the actual mark. I found the mark and Reference Mark #1, although they both have had the bronze disks destroyed and are difficult to find. The station mark is about 30 feet north of Reference #2. Follow the arrow on Ref #2. Reference #1 is about 25 feet east of the station mark, toward the dead tree. Photos attached.

I had an easier time finding the geodetic marker than trying to find what its official name/number were. Great location to visit.

Great double dip! Got to log a Benchmark + Virtual cache at the same spot! Great view from the top of the dome.

With the exception of the post by "oneoldman", all of the photos seem to be of the Reference Mark #2. Anyone find the true benchmark? Since it is a triangulation station, it would have a small triangle in the center of the disk. The arrow on the #2 disk points to it. Should be close. There should also be a disk with #1 and an arrow, probably 90 degrees from #2.

I am planning a trip to Enchanted Rock in the near future. Haven't been there since the 70's. New to geocaching, but have been benchmark hunting as a volunteer to NOAA for years.

Found while on top of Enchanted Rock. Beautiful windy day, perfect day for a hike to the summit. Thanks Rich & Lola

Finding the benchmark was a great reason for hiking up this awesome granite dome.

Found this while hiking to the top of the rock.

Got to discussing benchmarks and how we'd like to log more of them and realized that I'd never logged this find from a year ago (today is August 1, 2006). Mda_taz and I were at this benchmark doing a virtual cache at Enchanted Rock.

The view is great up here!

Found this several months ago before knowing about benchmarking as a hobby. Went back recently and found it again.

By the way, there's a good cave you can find your way into nearby. Start heading down the rock face towards the northwest about 300-400 feet till you hit a series of large boulders; look around the southeast side until you find an arrow spray painted on one of them. Follow it in; it goes several hundred feet, including some pretty tight squeezes. If you don't want crickets jumping on you (or you dislike crawling a couple inches below a ceiling carpeted with bouncing daddy long legs), you may want to wait till winter for this one. Bring a headlamp.

found it as geocache as well.

Found it on a windy day.

Thanks!

A great day for a great day at our favorite park. Found in conjunction with the virtual geocache.

Found this (my first benchmark!) while on a trip to the hill country. This is also a virtual cache.

Found this on a Boy Scout Campout, what a great hike up the rock, first time to park and first time to do a Benchmark. We had 28 scouts and 8 leaders/parents. Thanks for the climb.

Found with Lakedawgs today. What a great place for a benchamrk!

Found in conjunction with a virtual cache. Beautiful view!

Nice, two-for-one find since this a virtual cache also!

This was my first benchmark. It was a nice day on the rock.

It was right there with a huge rock holding it up. Went down the north side of Echo Canyon intent on circling Little Rock to the west. Be careful. What you may think is the correct trail past the outhouse may not be. Sunset is not a good time to be looking for trails around there.

Our first benchmark. Found it without realizing that it was even a benchmark.

Great day to be on the rock. I went to the spot that my gps said it was, looked down, and there it was. Very nice.

Found it in a big rain storm. Writing is a bit faded, but still readable.

Right on top of things...

We have seen this benchmark out here at Enchanted Rock for many years, but now that we're geocaching (and benchmarking), we can actually log it.

Here it is!

Climbed that big pink rock on the clearest day of the year. Park was filled to capacity, and each camper took their turns standing on the marker!

Found my very first one today. Perfect day to start a new pastime. Wind was quite ferocious but was still in shorts and tank top. Have to love fall in Texas.

Good start for the day. Very nice spot to view Texas hill country. Visited spot with Lifedance, Moosiegirl, TreyB and Ydx3075.

Had a great time & climb at Enchanted Rock.

Nice to log a virtual cache and my first benchmark at the same location. Makes that LONNNNNG climb worth a tad bit more.

Happy Trails,
Candy

Went up and found this one while Geocaching in Enchanted Rock state park. Verrrrrry windy.

First benchmark found. Actually I just kinda stumbled on it while at the rock and recorded it's position with my GPS so I could log it later.

The LoveBugs love to find the benchmark every time we go. You must check out the cave.

First time up Enchanted Rock. I guess it's OK to log this even though it's a virtual cache. Great view, but sure was windy.

Near high point of Enchanted Rck. Great view. Photo of benchmark

Great views. First time at Enchanted Rock. Found two geo-caches while here.

What a great view!!! About fifty folks hiked to the top of this big rock for my sister's wedding. After the sun had set and when the full moon was rising they were joined in the most beautiful ceremony. It was fun getting all the family and friends back down the rock in the dark.

Hiking up on the Rock with friends. Also knew this was here as its pretty well known by frequent visitors. Pezman

Figure I might as well get credit for this benchmark even though it was a virtual cache too. Found this with my two sons although we've been up here many times.

A very windy day on the rock!

Found this one while geocaching to the virtual cache at the same location. Came here with kimbo on a beautiful winter day. She was huffing and puffing up the rock.

Myself and a couple friends found this one in total darkness, without the coords. :) (I'd been here many times before)

found it while up on the rock a few years ago (March 20 1999.) I have a picture of it online at at the bottom of my Enchanted Rock photo page:
