Found poor. The top of the monument has broken off and the disk is missing. There is an impression of the disk stem in the concrete. Measured the distances called out in the to reach description and three of them made a triangle with 3 foot sides - the monument was within the triangle. The distance 'north from the bluff' is way off. The post to the east of the monument is still there - at six feet - but the copper tack is missing.

Searched for this mark using a metal detector for about one hour and could not find it. There is an old 4"x3" wooden post projecting about 2 inches above the vegetation near the monument's coordinates - it is loose in the ground and seems to be 'buried' only several inches.
Will try to search for this again before I log a DNF - mainly because it was a nice short hike on a beautifull/isolated part of the coast :).
Access through the fence to the beach and parking at N35 43.453 W121 18.740.

Documented History (by the NGS)

Unknown by (MONUMENTED)
01/01/1962 by CGS (MONUMENTED)
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1962 (CTH) AS DESCRIBED ON PAGE 731 IN THE REPORT OF 1904--ABOUT 650 METERS WEST OF THE MOUTH OF THE ARROYO LA CRUZ, ON A SHARP, NARROW LITTLE POINT OF LAND, ABOUT 20 METERS FROM THE EDGE OF THE BLUFFS TOWARDS THE SEA, ON LAND CLAIMED BY DON JUAN CASTRO. THE UNDERGROUND MARK WAS A BURIED BOTTLE 3 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE, AND THE SURFACE MARK A REDWOOD STUB OVER THE CENTER, PROJECTING 1 1 FOOT OR MORE, WITH A COPPER TACK IN THE TOP. THREE WITNESS STUBS WERE DRIVEN EVEN WITH THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND, TO THE NORTH, SOUTH, AND EAST, EACH WITH A COPPER TACK IN THE TOP, 6 FEET FROM THE CENTER OF STATION. THREE BOTTLES, WITH THE NECKS POINTING TO THE CENTER OF STATION, WERE BURIED 1 FOOT DEEP. RECOVERED THE CENTER BOTTLE, ITS OPENING 2.4 FEET BELOW GROUND SURFACE, AND TO THE EAST 1.7 FEET FROM THE CENTER THE OPENING OF A BOTTLE POINTING TOWARDS THE STATION, BURIED ABOUT 1 FOOT BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE. TWO OTHER BOTTLES POINTING TOWARDS THE CENTER WERE NOT FOUND, NOR EXTENSIVELY SEARCHED FOR. WOOD STUBS WERE TO THE EAST AND SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTER AT ABOUT 6 FEET. REPLACED THE CENTER BOTTLE WITH A TRIANGULAR SHAPED STONE, A 1-INCH DRILL HOLE IN ITS FLAT TOP, THE DRILL HOLE POUNDED FULL OF ALUMINUM FOIL, A COPPER TACK IN ITS CENTER, 3 FEET BELOW GROUND SURFACE. THE STONE WAS COVERED WITH ABALONE SHELL AND DIRT FOR 6-INCHES, THENCE OVER THE CENTER A SECTION OF CONCRETE FILLED SOIL PIPE 30-INCHES LONG, WITH A STANDARD DISK IN THE TOP, STAMPED SIERRA NEVADA 1873, FLUSH WITH THE GROUND, SITUATED 10 FEET NORTHEAST FROM EDGE OF BLUFF, 40 FEET SOUTH FROM THE SEAWARD POINT, 24 FEET NORTH FROM EDGE OF BLUFF, 30 FEET SOUTHWEST FROM EDGE OF BLUFF, AND FROM THE STATION, THE EAST SHOULDER OF LA CRUZ ROCK IS IN RANGE WITH THE LARGE ROCK OFF PIEDRAS BLANCA POINT (IE, WITH THE WEST SHOULDER OF THE LATTER). FROM CROSSING BRIDGE OVER ARROYO DE LA CRUZ, CONTINUE NORTHWARD ON STATE HIGHWAY 1 FOR ABOUT 0.5 MILE FROM WHERE TO THE WEST ACROSS A CULTIVATED FIELD ARE SAND DUNES ALONG THE COAST, AND THE STATION IS ABOUT 1/2 MILE DISTANT ON THE POINT BEYOND THE DUNES.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1996. The horizontal coordinates are valid at the epoch date displayed above. The epoch date for horizontal control is a decimal equivalence of Year/Month/Day.
  • The orthometric height was scaled from a topographic map.
  • The Laplace correction was computed from DEFLEC99 derived deflections.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
