I thought that I'd try a few Benchmarks around the area. This one was easy with the descriptions and pictures by previous cachers. I'll add 1 of my own of the benchmark.

This is a straight on view of the sign in front of the church. The benchmark is on the front right-hand side of the planter.

Disk is plainly visible on the east side of a block-enclosed flower bed surrounding an illuminated sign in front of the church. The east side faces the street. The description and 1981 recovery report are not entirely clear.

Location is 22 inches east of the east end of the church sign (the sign itself, not the surrounding brickwork). Disk is 9.5 feet west of the west edge of a cable vault across the sidewalk from the church sign.

Disk is scuffed and stamping is partly illegible, but datum point is intact.

I got coordinates from my GPS as 37 54 36.0, -089 49 31.9

Probably a bit more accurate is 37.909908, -89.825371 (37 54 35.67, -89 49 31.34) from Google Maps.

Missed it on first look and then did find it under dead grass and some mud.

FTF! Found right out in front of the church, on the outside edge of a flower bed.

I did not find this benchmark disk. I paced off the distances and they appeared to point to an area under the sidewalk. Nothing was obvious in the lawn area near the sidewalk. I did not probe nor dig in their lawn area.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991. WARNING-Repeat measurements at this control monument indicate possible vertical movement.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
