Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh, today the Arcadia stopped in San Francisco. Since we will be here overnight, we decided to head south from the ship's pier this afternoon. We grabbed several caches and benchmarks along our route. We put several miles on our shoes today so it will be nice to have a swim and relax back on the ship before heading to Alcatraz tomorrow. Greetings from Toronto, Canada -TFTC

Location, mark is small disc in front base of column

Also got these two. I don't get how they are placed and where, yet. I'll have to do some homework after my vacation and study some data sheets and history.

Found SB3 4745/1964 as described at the coordinates given by novato-larry in 2003. The coordinates posted by j2d2zhu in 2012 are wrong.

Another one within close walking distance of my office. Love those! The description made this an easy find. Once you get to the described column it is plain as day and easy to spot. EZPZ!

Found this one in good condition.

On a pedestal, in a doorway, on the side of a building, these things are all over the place. Another detail that I previously never noticed.

GPS not need for this BM. Just follow the description.

There it is, in plain sight. SFBARTD 1964. I'm guessing this was set during the planning /construction of the transbay tube.

Found it. (And just in case I wasn't sure this was it, someone wrote "HT0687" in red above the disc on the granite base)

The coordinates were off but the written discription of the location was correct.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
