Found during our 5 days visit in NYC

Thanks for showing us this place.

Found in good condition as described. Enter the park from 52nd Street, and you'll walk past the playground to reach the playground entrance. As you're walking past the rocky outcrop, there is a sign that mentions De Witt Clinton. The benchmark is just to the right of that sign, as you face it, and about midway across the rock.

Found it in good condition. It was recessed and filled with water but it is there. Pic didn't come out and I didn't have anything to clean it out without getting wet and dirty.

found on my long walk home. Got to the park and found the playground with its out cropping bedrock- but no mark. Then I noticed a small depression filled with water. Cleaned this out and there it was :D.

Found with little difficulty. After reading Harry's log I checked the head of the staff on duty at the park. She thought it was funny that we asked and said we had her permission. Nobody accosted either my wife or me this time.
Note that there is a sign that DOES say "No adults without children". I don't think this is a bad idea and would limit oddballs walking around the park oogling kids. Harry's experience was, I hope, a unique one.

Quiet little park at 10am. We had four days of rain recently, so the BM was under the surface of a tiny pool.

I had to scoop the water out of the hole in which this disk is embedded.
I do not know why any surveyor would want to use this disk, without bringing a child along. I was accosted by a foul-mouth, combative parent. I would not use such language to any person, much less with one's small children about.

Found during one of our recent trips to Manhattan.

The back (west side) of the park is a playground with a separate fence, bathrooms, etc. BM is on the bedrock in the playground. About 2/3 of the way from the south end, on the west side of the bedrock, 2 or 3 feet west of the concrete. Once you see it you wonder why it was so hard to find.

View of bedrock from its SW end. BM is visible in the center forground in a little hollow in the rock, just past the border between the light colored rock and the grey rock.

The disc area is located in a playground in the SW corner of the park. Best estimate: The disc has been removed from the bedrock, but there is a concrete fill where it must have been located. The park closes at dusk and the playground says No adults except in the company of children.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
