Reference Mark 2 was recovered in good condition at N 41° 23.302 W 082° 18.473. The West USLS Reference Post was recovered in poor condition at N 41° 23.299 W 082° 18.493. The post has been damaged and is leaning. The South USLS Reference Post was recovered in good condition at N 41° 23.303 W 082° 18.462. The East USLS Reference Post was recovered in good condition at N 41° 23.310 W 082° 18.423. The azimuth mark was searched for and not found. The barn has been removed and the area regraded.

DESCRIBED BY US LAKE SURVEY 1877 THIS STATION IS SITUATED NEAR THE CENTER OF BROWNHELM TOWNSHIP, LORAIN COUNTY, OHIO, ABOUT 1-1/2 MILES IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION FROM BROWNHELM RAILWAY DEPOT, AND ONE HALF MILE NORTHWESTERLY FROM THE CORNER OF LOTS 44, 45, 52, AND 53 IN BROWNHELM TOWNSHIP. THE HEIGHT OF STATION USED WAS 124 FEET. THE GEODETIC POINT IS MARKED IN THE USUAL MANNER. THREE STONE REFERENCE POSTS ARE SET AS FOLLOWS- ONE BEARING SOUTH 87 DEG 31 MIN EAST, DISTANT 57.5 METERS, ONE BEARING SOUTH 10 DEG 06 MIN WEST, DISTANT 14.65 METERS, AND ONE BEARING SOUTH 53 DEG 41 MIN WEST, DISTANT 42.35 METERS. THE HEIGHT OF GROUND AT THE STATION ABOVE MEAN LEVEL OF LAKE ERIE IS 180.8 FEET.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1957 (LFV) A THOROUGH SEARCH OF THE AREA WAS MADE BUT NO EVIDENCE OF STATION MARK OR REFERENCE STONES COULD BE FOUND. THE AREA IS COMPLETELY OVERGROWN WITH BRUSH AND TREES. ALSO, THERE ARE NUMEROUS PLACES IN THE APPROXIMATE VICINITY OF THE STATION SHOWING EVIDENCE OF HAVING BEEN BLASTED IN TESTING FOR A QUARRY SITE.

RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1959 (WER) THE STATION MARK AND THREE STONE REFERENCE POSTS WERE RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. A NEW STATION SURFACE MARK, AN UNDERGROUND STATION MARK, AND TWO REFERENCE MARKS WERE ESTABLISHED BY THIS PARTY. THE STATION MARKS WERE SET IN THE PRECISE POSITION TO REMARK THE ORIGINAL ESTABLISHMENT OF THE U.S.L.S. STATION MARK. A COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS- THE STATION IS ABOUT 8.5 MILES NORTH OF KIPTON, 8.0 MILES NORTHWEST OF OBERLIN, 3.75 MILES SOUTHEAST OF VERMILLION, 2.0 MILES NORTH OF THE OHIO TURNPIKE, NEAR THE CENTER OF BROWNHELM TOWNSHIP AND ON PROPERTY OWNED BY MR. WILLIAM LEIMBACK. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION OF STATE HIGHWAYS 113 AND 511 IN THE SMALL VILLAGE OF HENRIETTA, GO NORTH ON HIGHWAY 511 (VERMILLION RD.) 0.9 MILE TO THE OHIO TURNPIKE. CONTINUE NORTH ON VERMILLION ROAD 2.1 MILES TO A Y-FORK. TURN RIGHT AND GO EAST ON NORTH RIDGE ROAD FOR 0.3 MILE TO THE LEIMBACK RESIDENCE ON THE LEFT. TURN LEFT THROUGH A GATE BETWEEN THE HOUSE AND THE BARNS AND GO ABOUT 100 FEET TO THE AZIMUTH MARK WHICH IS AT THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE BARN ON THE LEFT. FOLLOW THE FARM LANE EAST AND NORTH FOR 0.2 MILE TO A TRACK ROAD LEADING RIGHT AT THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE WOODS. TURN RIGHT AND GO EASTERLY ALONG THE TRACK ROAD FOR 0.15 MILE TO A LONE WALNUT TREE WITH A TRIANGLE BLAZE ON THE LEFT. TURN LEFT AND GO ABOUT 60 FEET TO THE WALNUT TREE AND THEN TURN LEFT AND GO WESTERLY FOR ABOUT 185 FEET TO THE STATION. STATION MARKS ARE STANDARD DISKS STAMPED BROWNHELM USLS 1877 1959. THE SURFACE DISK IS SET IN A SQUARE CONCRETE POST FLUSH THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. IT IS 59 FEET. WEST OF A 30-INCH WALNUT TREE WITH A TRIANGLE BLAZE AND 28 FEET NORTH WEST OF A 30-INCH DECIDUOUS TREE WITH A TRIANGLE BLAZE ON THE NORTHWEST SIDE. A STANDARD METAL WITNESS POST WAS SET 2.6 FEET NORTHWEST OF THE MARK. THE UNDERGROUND DISK IS SET IN IRREGULAR MASS OF CONCRETE 30 INCHES BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1, A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BROWNHELM USLS NO 1 1877 1959, IS SET IN A SQUARE CONCRETE POST WHICH PROJECTS 4 INCHES. IT IS 41.5 FEET NORTHEAST OF A 30-INCH DECIDUOUS TREE. REFERENCE MARK NO. 2, A STANDARD DISK STAMPED BROWNHELM USLS NO 2 1877 1959, IS CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN A LARGE, FLAT-TOPPED BOULDER WHICH IS FLUSH WITH THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND. THE WESTERLY U.S.L.S. STONE REFERENCE POST IS A 4 BY 4 INCH STONE POST WHICH PROJECTS 6 INCHES. THERE IS A SMALL HOLE CUT BETWEEN THE LETTERS U S IN THE TOP OF THE POST. THIS POST IS LEANING SLIGHTLY. THE SOUTHERLY U.S.L.S. STONE REFERENCE POST IS A 4 BY 4 INCH STONE POST WHICH PROJECTS 4 INCHES. THERE IS A SMALL HOLE CUT BETWEEN THE LETTERS U S IN THE TOP OF THE POST. THE EASTERLY U.S.L.S. STONE REFERENCE POST IS A 4 BY 4 INCH STONE POST WHICH PROJECTS 4 INCHES. IT HAS THE LETTERS U S CUT IN THE TOP OF THE POST. IT IS 22.5 FEET SOUTHEAST OF A 14-INCH WALNUT TREE WITH A TRIANGLE BLAZE AND 41 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE TRACK.

RECOVERY NOTE BY US LAKE SURVEY 1975 (WAB) STATION MARK, REFERENCE MARKS AND POSTS, AND AZIMUTH MARK ALL RECOVERED IN GOOD CONDITION. ADDITIONAL DESCRIPTIVE DATA FOLLOWS- TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE INTERSECTION OF US RTE 6 (OHIO 2) AND OHIO RTE 57 IN DOWNTOWN LORAIN, OHIO, PROCEED WESTERLY ALONG RTE 6 FOR 6.0 MILES TO RTE 2 (LORAIN FORD ASSEMBLY PLANT ON LEFT), CONTINUE WEST ON US RTE 6 FOR 1.3 MILES TO SUNNYSIDE ROAD ON LEFT, TURN LEFT (SOUTH) ON SUNNYSIDE ROAD, CROSSING OVER THE RAILROAD TRACKS AND THE RTE 2 OVERPASS, FOR 2.7 MILES TO SUNNYSIDE ROADS DEAD END AT NORTH RIDGE ROAD (CEMETARY ON RIGHT), TURN RIGHT FOR 0.2 MILE TO THE LEIMBACH RESIDENCE AND FARM ON THE RIGHT (NORTH) SIDE OF NORTH RIDGE ROAD. PASS THRU THE TWO FARM SHEDS (AZIMUTH MARK ON LEFT) AND PROCEED ALONG THE FIELD LANES TO THE STATION AS DESCRIBED IN THE 1959 RECOVERY. TO REACH THE STATION FROM THE BRIDGE OVER THE VERMILION RIVER (US RTE 6) IN VERMILION, OHIO, PROCEED EAST ON US RTE 2 FOR 2.8 MILES TO SUNNYSIDE ROAD ON THE RIGHT, TURN SOUTH AND CONTINUE TO THE STATION AS DESCRIBED. THE STATION AND REFERENCES ARE SET BACK INSIDE A DENSE, ROCK-STREWN WOODED AREA WITH LITTLE OR NO REFERENCE POINTS OTHER THAN TREES. NUMEROUS BLAZES WERE MADE IN TREES SURROUNDING THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS DURING THIS RECOVERY. LINES WERE CLEARED BETWEEN THE STATION AND ALL REFERENCE MARKS, HOWEVER, THE AZIMUTH MARK IS NO LONGER VISIBLE DUE TO PINE TREES SITUATED ON LINE IN AN INTERVENING FIELD.
