Out with zeeko and learned all about benchmarks!

Out with NathanZ98 for some lunchtime grabs. I was giving him a quick lesson in the car on Benchmark Hunting when we stopped to make this find. Easy parking near by and a quick find!

Heh-heh, it's funny to see my own DNF logs because I wasn't fully aware of all the tricks of the trade in BM hunting. That is, they aren't always at the coords. Then again the area around this mark has some tall grasses, so it might be easy to miss. Found this one pretty much dead on. The 'setting' pic is a view toward the SE from the described intersection.

Made a decent search of ground zero & beyond without success. There are gas and electric posts & markers in the area (looks like there will be some construction soon). Grass is high, so I could have missed the BM. See pic, however; the semi-barren spot was ground zero per my GPSr.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
