Easy bean hark is there

I WAS HERE IN FEBRUARY OF 2009 WITH THE REST OF THE GANG BUT FAILED TO REPORT UNTIL NOW.
MARK IS STILL THERE AS IT WILL BE FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS TO COME. CALLAWAYMT'S COORDINATES ARE PERFECT AS HE WAS USING SURVEY GRADE GPS.

Found as listed, but took some time to locate. Mark is just south of a four foot juniper. Cords. provided by CallawayMT are right on the mark.

Describe in the 1912 COE Bulletin No. 3, 'Bench Marks on the Missouri River' P 110

'Gauge B. M. Madison-Jefferson River: Is on R.B. 0f the Madison-Jefferson River, about 1/4 mile above mouth of Gallatin River, 30 feet above and 20 feet back of gauge, 30 feet up-stream from a path leading from skiff landing up cliff of rock; being cross cut on top of rock cliff, marked thus (shows a B. M. over an X) Elev., 3627.793.'

A note on page four of this reports indicates that 413.77 feet needs to be added to bring it up to the mean Gulf datum, or 4041.563. The DS posted benchmark elevation is now 4046.05

Found with Kayakbird and Square Nail. Kayak gets credit for being in the correct general location, but was off by about 40' northeast. It is found above the Missouri River on a popular rock outcrop near a parking area in the Headwaters State Park.

This mark was used and described around 1900 by the Missouri River Commission. We compared the elevation between this station and MORC station South Base with the difference between 2009 GPS and 1900's levels being 0.11'.

The "B" seems to have been re-scribed above a messed up version.

The DATASHEET Lat/Long and map here do not fit the description or the geography. The "Rough X" is on what is known as "Ling Rock" which is upstream and south southwest of the confluence with the Gallatin River.

DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1958 1.25 MI N FROM GALLATIN CITY. 1-1/4 MILES NORTH OF THE SITE OF OLD GALLATIN CITY, GALLATIN COUNTY, ON THE RIGHT BANK OF JEFFERSON-MADISON RIVER, 1/4 MILE UPSTREAM FROM THE MOUTH OF GALLATIN RIVER, 30 YARDS WEST OF THE CREST OF A CLIFF, 30 FEET UPSTREAM FROM A PATH LEADING TO A BOAT LANDING, 45 FEET SOUTHWEST OF TWO COTTONWOOD TREES, AND ON THE TOP OF A LIMESTONE LEDGE PROJECTING INTO THE RIVER. A CHISELED CROSS.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in 1992. * This is a POSTED BENCH MARK height. Code A indicates a distribution rate of 0.0 thru 1.0 mm/km.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
