The marks in this area were a bit of a challenge. Permission had to be obtained from the field manager at Aera Energy to enter the area, as it is now part of their Brea oil field. Additional geocaching benchmark hunters, please pass on this benchmark. The road along which these marks are located used to be a portion of Brea Canyon Road, until the new road was built to the north (I believe when the nearby freeway interchange was built). The scaled benchmarks in this area are all 400+ feet off location, even worse than usual for scaled marks, and the descriptions are old. Fun! The mark itself is in good condition.

NEW TO REACH DIRECTIONS – FROM THE NORTHBOUND 57 FREEWAY, EXIT AT TONNER CANYON RD. TURN WEST UNDER THE FREEWAY FOR 0.2 MI TO THE ‘T’ INTERSECTION. PROCEED SOUTH ON BREA CANYON RD FOR 0.2 MI TO AN OLD GATED PAVED RD ON THE LEFT, ACROSS THE ROAD FROM AN OIL FIELD ENTRANCE GATE. IF NECESSARY, A KEY TO THE GATE MAY BE OBTAINED FROM AERA ENERGY OR LINN WESTERN (OIL FIELD OPERATIONS IN TRANSITION AT THIS TIME). CURRENT PHONE NUMBERS ARE ON THE GATE. PROCEED THROUGH THE GATE FOR APPROX 0.1 MI TO THE MARK ON THE RIGHT.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in February 1997.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (G = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
