Spent a mild winter's day benchmark hunting in Brooklyn, ending up with 26 marks out of 29 attempts.

Found in good condition. This mark had been painted, but the lettering has been scraped free of the paint. The Sign-O-Rama store was apparently replaced by another retail establishment which has also closed, and the storefront is for rent.

Found as described in good condition.

The Fireball Bar has given way to the Sign-A-Rama company. I'm not sure if that's progress or not.

AT NEW YORK, IN BOROUGH OF BROOKLYN, AT CONEY ISLAND, LOCATED AT INTERSECTION OF NEPTUNE AND STILLWELL AVENUES, SET VERTICALLY IN THE EAST FACE OF BUILDING LOCATED IN SOUTHWEST CORNER OF INTERSECTION AND OCCUPIED BY THE FIREBALL BAR, 1.7 FEET NORTH OF EDGE OF EAST DOORWAY ENTRANCE TO BAR AND ABOUT 2 1/2 FEET ABOVE SIDE WALK.

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
