Spent a mild winter's day benchmark hunting in Brooklyn, ending up with 26 marks out of 29 attempts.

Found as described and in good condition. Note Papa-Bear's correction to the building's address.

Found this one after encountering Schbus86 nearby. Easy find! I don't have a real GPS I use my phone so I couldn't take a pic of the benchmark and the GPS...close-up photo taken from my phone.

I use my phone to find caches/benchmarks, so I coudn't take a pic of the benchmark AND my GPS because my GPS (and camera) are my phone!

Found as described in good condition.

The apartment building address is 8701 Shore Road, not 8700 Shore Road.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1952 AT NEW YORK. AT NEW YORK, IN BOROUGH OF BROOKLYN, NEAR JUNCTION OF 87TH STREET AND SHORE ROAD, SET VERTICALLY IN WEST FACE OF APARTMENT BUILDING OF 8700 SHORE ROAD, 4 1/2 FEET NORTH OF NORTH MOST WINDOW OF WEST FACE OF BUILDING AND ABOUT 3 FEET ABOVE GROUND.

Control Text

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
