We were picking up my daughter in Woods Hole at the ferry from Martha's Vinyard on the way to a family reunuion on the Cape. We managed to spend a half hour or so around this quaint village and bagged 4 of the 6 tidal benchmarks in Woods Hole - the other two were on or near the pier which was off limits behind a fence with a locked gate.

I almost missed this one. I was searching on the bottom granite step and then I re-read the description which said it was mounted vertically in the side of the sill. There it was, in great condition since 1913! This is the oldest USC&GS disk I have found. The design has changed very little over the years.

DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1978 IN WOODS HOLE. SET VERTICALLY IN WEST SIDE OF GRANITE FOOT SILL ON WEST SIDE OF FRONT ENTRANCE STEPS TO THE MARINE BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY, AT THE SOUTHEAST ENTRANCE TO BUILDING.

  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • This Tidal Bench Mark is designated as VM 197 by the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
