This is cache is part of our series, Sacred Springs. A sacred spring, or holy well, is a small body of water emerging from underground and venerated either in a pagan or a Christian context, often both. The term is commonly employed to refer to any water source of limited size which has some significance in the folklore of the local area. This can take the form of a particular name, an associated legend, or the attribution of healing qualities. In Christian legend, the spring water is often said to have been made to flow by the action of a saint. Our approach on the sacrality of these springs is slightly profane: it refers mostly to the holiness of native land.
This time we invite you to a short hiking to Baciu-Gorges, where you can find one of the most generous springs of our region. Year 1934 was an outstanding one in the history of the Cluj Kolping Association of Journeyman. It was the year when, on the 9th of September they inaugurated the newly-built well in Baciu-Gorges, named after their mentor, Adolf Kolping. The well was consecrated by Bishop Joseph Hirschler, in the presence of many prominent citizens of Cluj and guests from other cities. The next year the construction was vandalized by unknown persons, in 1942 was restaurated, but it didn't last long...
Adolf Kolping (1813—1865) was a German Catholic priest. In 1847 he became the president of the Catholic Association of Journeymen, which gave young journeymen religious and social support. (A journeyman was a craftsman who has completed an apprenticeship, had fully learned his trade and earned money but was not yet a master.) In 1850 Kolping united the existing journeymen associations as the Federation of Journeymen of the Rhine Region in 1850. This fusion was the origin of today’s international Kolpingwerk. Until his death he labored to spread the federation of journeymen associations. By the year of his death, there were more than four hundred journeymen associations worldwide.
