Geocache Description:

The cache is in Bald Rock canyon on the San Juan arm of Lake Powell. Only accessible via boat. There is a small beach at the far end of the cove that should be suitable to dock a ski boat/personal water craft. This is also an excellent house boating location but if we find you there the third week of July – you will be harassed miserably.

As you enter the cove your GPS should be pointing the right. When we stood exactly inside the “ancient ruins” my etrex vista indicated 25 feet accuracy. Because of the high canyon walls, reception is not the greatest. Luckily, the strange rock formation (“ancient ruins”) makes for a good visual cue as to where the cache is. When we hid the cache the water was approximately 70 feet below the high water mark so there was a significant amount of scrambling up the steep rocks to get to the cache site, ergo difficulty rating of 4, but would be much easier if the water was up. The easiest way up is to hike back into the canyon and then head right, up a dirt hill, and then traverse over to the cache site. My friend Bonnie constructed the “ancient ruins” in 1986. It is right at the high water mark. Due to Bonnie’s architectural prowess at 10 years of age and the fact that the water never went above this point, her fort still stands today – almost 20 years later!! We thought you might enjoy this location and seeing Bonnie’s fort. Please respect her hard work, feel free to add a rock or two while you visit. The cache is a Tupperware container with a blue lid. The original contents included: 2 tennis balls (good for playing fetch with your 4-legged friends), clothesline reel, whistle, mini carabeener, Post-it notes, water toy, emergency poncho, erasers, pencil sharpener, Kit-Pop toy, travel bug # 422485 (heading to Cuba), log book with two pencils and one pen.
