This cache is located where the locals have their beds to produce rock salt or sea salt as you might want to call it. Hence the name “Salt Pond” came about. The art of salt-making was handed down through the generations to families of ancient salt makers along with the ownership of a salt bed parcel. Salt produced from here are usually not for sale. You will need permission from a salt maker in order to enter the pond. So please be respectful of that. Of course, you will not need to enter the ponds to find the cache. Adjacent to the ponds is the Port Allen Airport better known as “Burns Field”. It was later given that name by the Army Air Corps after it became Kauai’s main airport in 1928. Now it’s primarily used by scenic helicopter tours and ultra-light aircraft operators as well as skydiving operations. I remember in the 70’s they also used this air strip for holding organized drag races for a time. Also check out the park and take a dip at the beach nearby. It’s a quaint little beach that is protected by the reef which keeps the high surf from coming in so it’s perfect for the young ones to enjoy.
The small cache with log (use back and front) and a pencil but please bring something to write with just in case it’s not in there. A little something to comemorate this cache for the FTF and a USA flag geocoin are in this cache. Log trackable promptly. Make sure to hide the cache just the way you found it. Please keep the cache clean, geocoins welcome. Good hunting!
I will occasionally leave a little something from these Beds for a lucky cacher to have.
