Thirteenth in a series of caches highlighting the art of Norfolk's Chrysler Museum, One Memorial Place, Norfolk, VA 23510. The Chrysler Museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday from Noon to 5 pm. Admission is Free. Website: www.chrysler.org. This sculpture may be seen in Gallery 208 at the museum.
According to Greek myth, Ganymede, the beautiful prince of Troy, caught the eye of the great god Zeus, who fell in love with the boy. Disguising himself as an eagle, Zeus carried the young prince off to Olympus, where he served as cupbearer to the gods. The contrast seen here between the boy’s soft skin and the bird’s rugged feathers enhances the story’s theme of innocence in the grip of cosmic cunning. With suave, psychologically intense works like this one, Bertel Thorvaldsen influenced a generation of Neoclassical sculptors whose works can be seen nearby.
Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) was a Danish/Icelandic sculptor of international fame, who spent most of his life in Italy. Thorvaldsen was born in Copenhagen into a family of humble means, and was accepted to the Royal Danish Academy of Art when he was 11 years old. Thorvaldsen won many honors & medals at the academy, and was awarded a stipend to travel to Rome & continue his education. In Rome, he quickly made a name for himself as a sculptor. Maintaining a large workshop in the city, he worked in a heroic neo-classicist style. Upon his return to Denmark in 1838, Thorvaldsen was received as a national hero. The Thorvaldsen Museum was erected to house his works next to the Christiansborg Palace. In his time, he was seen as the successor to master sculptor Antonio Canova. Among his most famous public monuments is the tomb of Pope Pius VII, the only work by a non-Catholic in St. Peter's Basilica.
