GEORGE'S AMAZING TRUE STORY: The real Lonesome George lived at the Charles Darwin research center on Santa Cruz Island in the Galapagos islands in Ecuador. He was found alone on the Pinta Islands and was moved to the research institute in 1972 to keep him safe. He may be the last one of his species. Lonesome George was quite famous and had fans all over the world.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT HIS SPECIES: His kind can live to be more than 150years old and weigh more than 500 pounds. They are herbivores. Whalers captured them for food and wild goats destroyed their habitat. This has caused them to become an endangered species. Update on George January 2011: George had two new female friends that are living with him in hopes of continuing the Pinta Island species. These females were the two best matches for his DNA. Scientist were still hoping to keep the Pinta Island species from becoming extinct. On June 24th 2012 the real Lonesome George died of heart failure at the Darwin institute in the Galapagos islands. He was only 100 years old. That is not old for a Galapagos tortoise. I am so sad that I never got to meet him.

Congratulations to JUST HIKE, on the FTF.
