Geocache Description:

his site marks the visit of the first elephant to the United States, which was exhibited near this cache during the winter of 1797. Since this area is busy, the cache is located on a site off the beaten path (where you will also find a little-known mini-park). The cache is a small, clear container the size of a deck of cards. It is hidden at ground level.

This cache is part of Ghost Gardens, Lost Landscapes, a multi-site exploration of lost, vanished, or forgotten Philadelphia gardens, landscapes, and animals. In each cache you will find directions for hearing more about what used to be on the site you're standing on and seeing historic images of what used to be there. (You'll need a mobile browser for this.) The sites are within walking distance of one another. With that one exception, they are in a dense urban area near many buildings so please use the descriptions and clues as well as the coordinates to find the caches. (You can also visit (visit link) for pictures of each site's hiding place.)

The sites were chosen to complement the gardens, landscapes, and animals showcased in Of Elephants and Roses: Encounters with French Natural History, an exhibition by the American Philosophical Society Museum. The exhibition is on view at 104 S. 5th Street until December 31, 2011 (admission is free) and in perpetuity at (visit link) Ghost Gardens was funded by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Heritage Philadelphia Program. Ghost Gardens was created by Erin McLeary (emcleary@gmail.com) and is maintained by the American Philosophical Society Museum.
