Cortiça - Projecto Alentejo [Ponte de Sor] Multi-cache

   Planícies sem fim queimadas pelo sol impõem um ritmo lento e compassado. É o nosso Alentejo.
   No Norte Alentejano, as serras começam a dar lugar às planícies. Andando para Sul, o interior mostra-nos as searas douradas ondulando ao vento, onde ao longe se deixam avistar algumas serras. Chegados ao litoral, somos deslumbrados por praias agrestes de uma beleza selvagem, lagoas verdejantes e rios que correm para a liberdade.

   O passado está sempre presente no Alentejo, desde a pré-história, passando pelo Império Romano, pela ocupação Árabe e pelos Castelos Medievais, os vestígios do passado são incontornáveis para o visitante, oferecendo uma verdadeira viagem no tempo.
   Mas, nem só do espírito vive o viajante, e quando o apetite se faz sentir, o Alentejo tem muito para oferecer. Neste capítulo a criatividade dos Alentejanos não tem limite. Umas entradas com um extraordinário queijo de Serpa ou de Nisa ou presunto de Barrancos acompanhado com um pão de Mértola, siga pela Sopa de Cação ou pelo Gaspacho, isto sem falar na Açorda Alentejana nem num peixe fresco grelhado acabado de pescar nas arribas rochosas da Costa Vicentina, continue com o Ensopado de Borrego ou com as Migas de Espargos com carne de porco, momento certo para provar um tinto de Borba, Redondo, Reguengos ou Vidigueira. Para terminar, os doces conventuais, que tal uma Sericaia, umas Trouxas-de-ovos ou um Toucinho Rançoso.

   Se gosta de passear pela natureza, passeie a pé pelo verde das Serras d’ Ossa, Portel ou Grândola. Visite o Parque Natural da Serra de S. Mamede onde as paisagens do Sul encontram as do Norte e descubra o mais Alto Alentejo. No litoral, faça uma viagem inesquecível entre os golfinhos do estuário do Sado ou delicie-se com a quietude das praias quase desertas do Sudoeste.

  Endless and sun burned plains set a slow and steady rhythm. It's our Alentejo.
   In the Northern Alentejo, the mountains are replaced by plains. As further as you head South you'll see the golden corn fields waving on the wind and at distance some shy mountains. As soon as we reach the shore we're amazed by wild and beautiful beaches, green lagoons and rivers that flow for the ocean's freedom.
  The past is something that is always present in Alentejo. From the Roman Empire, the Muslim occupation and the Medieval Castles, the past remains are something impossible to avoid by the visitors, to whom is offered a real time travel.
  But, not only of the spirit the travellers can live, and when the appetite makes it feel, the Alentejo has a lot to offer. In that chapter Alentejo people's creativity knows no limit. As starter an extraordinary cheese from Serpa or Nisa or even a piece of ham from Barrancos with some bread from Mértola. After that, a squalus soup or a cold tomato soup, this without speaking in the Alentejo Bread-Soup or a grilled fish just caught at the rocky cliffs of Vicentine Coast. After that continue with a Ham ragout or some bread soup with asparagus with pork meat, right moment to taste some Borba, Redondo, Reguengos or Vidigueira red wine. To finish, the conventual deserts. What about a "Sericaia", some "Trouxas-de-ovos" or a "Toucinho Rançoso".
  If you like to walk trough the Nature, take a walk by Ossa, Portel or Grândola mountains ranges. Visit the S. Mamede Natural Park where the South landscape meet the Northern and discover the highest Alentejo. Close to the shore make an unforgettable travel with the dolphins in the Sado's estuary or delight yourself with the Northwest almost deserted beaches.  

 The Alentejo has a lot to offer and waits for your visit.

  Este projecto, nasceu da conjugação dos esforços de vários geocachers Alentejanos que resolveram divulgar o “seu” Alentejo. O projecto ALENTEJO, consta de uma série de caches temáticas espalhadas pela maior região do país e de uma cache mistério final a que só será possível aceder depois de visitar as outras. Aproveite estas caches, não só para descobrir os temas referidos, mas também para conhecer melhor o Alentejo.

 THE PROJECT ALENTEJO

  This Project was born with the joined efforts of some Geocachers from Alentejo that decided to divulge "their" Alentejo. The Project ALENTEJO, is formed by a group of geocaches hidden all over the countries' larger region and a final geocache that you'll only be able to find after visiting all the others. Use these caches, not only to know more about the themes but also to know better the Alentejo.

QUERCUS SUBER

  A Quercus Suber é uma árvore produtora de cortiça da região mediterrânea.
Árvore de porte médio, com uma copa ampla, com uma altura média de 15 - 20 m. Pode
atingir, em casos extremos, os 25 m de altura. O tronco tem uma casca espessa, vulgarmente designada por cortiça.

  É devido à cortiça que o sobreiro tem sido cultivado desde tempos remotos. A extracção da cortiça não é (em termos gerais) prejudicial à árvore, uma vez que esta volta a produzir nova camada de "casca" (súber) com idêntica espessura a cada 9 - 10 anos, período após o qual é submetida a novo descortiçamento. O sobreiro também fazia parte da vegetação natural da Península Ibérica, sendo espontâneo em muitos locais de Portugal e Espanha, onde constituía, antes da acção do Homem, frondosas florestas em associação com outras espécies, nomeadamente do género Quercus.

  A extracção regular da cortiça do sobreiro é muito importante para a sustentabilidade dos montados, adaptados a uma exploração económica um contexto multiuso em perfeita harmonia com a protecção ambiental. O sobreiro é parte de um sistema multifuncional e estável em equilíbrio com o seu meio ambiente.

QUERCUS SUBER

  Quercus suber is a tree of the mediterrean that produces cork. It has a medium size, with a dense tree top, and a medium height of 15-20m, that can reach, in extreme cases 25m of height, the trunk have a thick bark commonly knows as cork.
  It’s for is cork that the cork-tree have been planted since immemorial times. The extraction of the cork is not (in general terms) prejudicial to the tree, once that the tree can produce a new layer of bark, with the same thickness every 9-10 years, period after the tree is submitted to a new “descortiçamento”.
  The cork tree is also part of the natural vegetation of the Iberian Peninsula, having a spontaneous growth in many places of Portugal and Spain, here it formed, before the interference of man, dense forests(in association with other species, normally of the “Quercus” gender) .
  The extraction of the cork is very important to the economic sustainability of the “montados”, adapted to an economic exploration in a multi - use context in perfect harmony with the environmentally exploration. The cork tree is a part of a multifunctional system in perfect balance with is environment.

A CORTIÇA

  A cortiça, casca do sobreiro, é uma matéria-prima renovável de características inigualáveis.
  As qualidades naturais da cortiça como isolamento térmico e acústico, resistência ao
fogo e a insectos, a impermeabilidade à água e aos óleos são inigualáveis. Alem destas qualidades a elasticidade, a leveza e a compressibilidade tornam-na um produto único no mundo.
  
A cortiça é um material ecológico, é usado na quase totalidade na sua transformação em produtos para diversos fins. Além de tudo é um produto natural e renovável.
A reciclagem da cortiça é possível e com elevada percentagem de reutilização.
 
 Produtos de cortiça

 Tomando a indústria portuguesa como referência, a divisão do consumo dos vários tipos de produtos é a seguinte:
     Rolhas de cortiça natural – 57% (13 biliões de rolhas)
     Rolhas de cortiça aglomerada – 11% (1,5 biliões de rolhas)
     Aglomerados para revestimento – 17% (10 milhões m2)
    Aglomerado expandido de cortiça – 6% (150000 m3)
    Outros – 8%
    Produtos não acabados – 1%

 As rolhas são ainda, e continuarão a ser num futuro próximo, o mais importante produto corticeiro, uma vez que o consumo de vinho está a aumentar mundialmente. Contudo, novos produtos técnicos de cortiça, com alto valor acrescentado, estão a ser introduzidos no mercado e a sua importância irá aumentar cada vez mais.

THE CORK

   The cork tree bark is a renewable raw material with outstanding characteristics.
   
   The natural qualities of the cork such like the thermic and acoustic isolation, resistance to the fire and bugs, the in permeability to water and oils are unmatchable. Besides those qualities, the elasticity, the slightness and the compressibility make it a unique product in the world.

   The cork is an ecologic material; it used in is most totality in transformation in products for diverse uses. Besides that is a natural and renewable product.
The recycling of cork is possible and has a high degree of success.

Cork Products

   Taking the Portuguese industry as reference, the division of consume of the various types of products are:

     Corks made of natural cork– 57% (13 billions of corks)
     Corks made of agglomerate – 11% (1.5 billions of corks)
     Agglomerated cork for revetment – 17% (10 millions m2)
     Expanded agglomerate of cork – 6% (150,000 m3)
     Others – 8%
     Not finished Products– 1%

   The corks are and will continue to be in a close future the most important product produced from cork oak.
   Wherever new technical products of cork, with increased price, are being introduced in the market and their influence will rise.

  With this small cache we intend to guide you to this place, near Ponte de Sor city where you can obseve lots of cork. This cache is part of the Project ALENTEJO, made of 18 caches + 1 Mistery cache.

  In order to find the geocache go to published coordinates and after to:

at both places (where you can see lots of cork), you must search the yellow characters in the posts of wood.
