Didn't get to attend the "Tunnel Vision" event last year? Well here's another chance to attend and get to walk through Natural Tunnel. Wear comfortable shoes (no open toed shoes, please) and get ready to view the tunnel from the inside. The tunnel will be lit up so visitors can get a good view of it.
You must park in the parking lot at the picnic area because you can't park at the Visitors Center that day (there is a $4 parking fee). A bus will then bring you over to the Visitors Center. Once you get to the Visitors Center, you can either ride the chairlift (there is a fee) or you can walk the trail down to the mouth of the tunnel. Look for the Scott County Tourism tent on the boardwalk at the mouth of the tunnel. That's where the meet and greet will be. If there is rain, they will be set up either just outside or possibly inside the Visitors Center. Although yumahokie has been your host for this event for the last four years; she will be unable to make the event this year. Instead, Pam Cox, Scott County Tourism Director, will be your host. Pam will have some special goodies for the geocachers! Don't forget to sign the log.
Although there may be several hundred people at this event this cannot be considered a "MEGA" geocaching event.
About Railroad Day: For years, the railroad has played a vital role in the economics and history of the area. Natural Tunnel State Park and Norfolk Southern Corporation are partnering together to share this natural wonder and promote railroad safety. For this event only, a waiver has been obtained that will allow visitors to explore the tunnel. Other activities include guided tours of the tunnel, Norfolk Southern Heritage Unit onsite, and other fun events as well. I'll update the cache page as the details become available. Regular park fees do apply for parking and chair lift rides (you can always hike down to the tunnel if you would prefer). For more information about Railroad Day at Natural Tunnel State Park, please contact the park office at (276) 940-2674.
