The cache is a good hike from the closest parking area when the gate is locked. Bring your boots and be prepared for tall grass in the spring. Generally, the best site to park is at N 42 45.413 W 76 04.691, which is best reached via Tully Road over the railroad tracks south out of Tully, up the hill and right onto Wells Road, past the classroom buildings and support structures to a parking area on the right off of an unpaved gravel road.
The general site of this cache, Heiberg Forest, is a large outdoor field laboratory setting for SUNY-ESF college students. Where else in this area can you rest assured that you are surrounded by 141 species of wildflowers, 76 different fungi, 13 ferns, 94 species of birds, 32 types of mammals, and 6 species of fish? (Where else would they bother to document this stuff but in academia!) And there’s gold in them there hills, too: “The forest sustains an estimated 19.5 cubic million feet of wood with an estimated value of six million dollars.” With all this to offer, it’s a wonder that the roads outside Tully aren’t lined with traffic.
The cache is a standard size ammo box with a variety of contents, pretty well crammed full of goodies for all ages when established. Please leave us a note and take your picture!
Do take time to explore this beautiful area. There is a wonderful self-guided nature trail close to the parking area. Cross-country skiing trails are also available. Enjoy!
