Mini geocaching decal for FTF!
This is a Geo-Post Office! It’s a letter and postcard swapping
spot. Just what is a geo-post office, you ask? Well, a geo-post
office is a cache set up to exchange post cards or letters between
geocachers!
So, how does this work exactly?
Geo-Post Office caches are placed to hold postcards or letters.
Every postcard will have a short message and a name of a cacher
with place that the card is trying to reach. The address should
contain the cacher’s username, city, state/province/country and
usually a specific cache name/number.
The objective is to move postcards between Geo-Post Offices
until they reach their desired location. When you move a postcard
from one place to another, you may let the person who sent the card
know you moved it. If it’s nearing its final destination, you may
want to contact the person it’s being sent to as he/she may want to
pick it up. If you move a postcard from one Geo-Post Office to
another please move it closer to the city or cache!
Who should I send a postcard to?
Anybody that you want as long as they are a geocacher. Send one to
yourself even (if you are on vacation this can be fun to receive
once you’re back home)!
What’s the point?
It’s fun!
How far can I send one?
As far as you want! Some cachers have created bookmarks of all
the geo-post offices so you can see where they exist. The nearest
one to this (at the time I wrote this) is in Barnesville, Minnesota
along I-94, Barnesville Geo Post Office GCZ6FT.
How Do I send one?
Go to any geo-post office and place your message or postcard in
there. Just be sure to sign your username and put the username,
city, state/province/country of the geocacher you’re sending it to.
For example:
To: Honeybee77
Jamestown, North Dakota, USA
GC1ECEZ “The Honeycomb”
Since geo-post offices are just catching on in the US, you may
want to include a note to cachers to move it from cache to cache
toward its destination (not just geo-post office caches).
How Do I start my own Geo-Post Office?
All you need is standard geocache gear (cache container, log
book, stash note, zip-top bags) and of course postcards or letters
to go in it! Make sure to put in the name of the cache “Geo-Post
Office” so that others will know what it is. You may even want to
include a note like this to inform the uninitiated.
