Geocache Description:

This forty-eighth cache of the “Caerphilly Collection” requires code information from other caches in the collection. Expect a walk of at least 5 miles with 700’ of ascent, on bleak (hostile in bad weather) moorland. A microcache (in a film canister) will provide the coordinates for the final regular cache (in a tumbler size plastic container). The reference coordinates for the cache are outside the Council area and not a helpful indicator of the cache location.

WARNING - ALL THINGS COME TO AN END AND THE CC CACHES ARE NO EXCEPTION. THE SERIES IS BEING RUN DOWN AND CODES ARE DISAPPEAR IN CONSEQUENCE. THE NUMBER MISSING AT 17/04/21 WAS FOUR, SO THIS CACHE IS GOING TO BE ARCHIVED SHORTLY. FOR A SHORT TIME, IT IS DISABLED TO ENABLE ANYONE WHO IS READY TO GO FOR IT TO GET IT (LOGS CAN STILL BE MADE IN THIS STATE). ANYONE WHO HAS 10 CODES (EXCLUDING THOSE FROM THE FOUR CACHES ARCHIVED BEFORE 17/04/21) CAN MESSAGE THE CO, TO GET THE LAST FOUR. BUT DON'T TAKE TOO LONG!. THE DEMISE OF ANOTHER CODE CONTAINING CACHE (CC46) ON 19/04/21. MEANS THAT IT IS NO LONGER POSSIBLE TO GET ALL OF THE CODES.

The Caerphilly Collection is distinguished with a unique CC number and is made up of 50 caches. The caches vary in difficulty and type and usually have other “C” word connections – castle, cheese, coal, canal, etc. There may even be Cryptic Clues for Clever Clogs! The current Caerphilly unitary authority grew out of the former Rhymney Valley and Islwyn Councils and stretches from the outskirts of Cardiff and Newport in the south to the Brecon Beacons, north of Rhymney. Despite a past dominated by coal and heavy industry, it has a diverse history and varied and dramatic scenery. We hope you will enjoy exploring it with us. The translation details of the code required to do CC48 The Accumulator are distributed around the whole Collection, but only about a third of the caches contain a piece of the code, which is on the back of the Log Book. To do the Accumulator, you will need to keep a note of each piece of code that you find. Unless you are very lucky, you will need to find the majority of the Collection in order to do the Accumulator. This means that you will probably have walked a minimum of 60 miles and done the equivalent of climbing Snowdon three times. If you have taken up the suggestions for doing the four long distance walks incorporated in the Collection, then you will have walked over 100 miles and climbed the equivalent of a good Alpine peak. The Accumulator cache is hidden in an area of difficult terrain and demanding navigation. You will need to negotiate bogs and boulder fields and should note that most of the boundaries shown on the Ordnance Survey map are still indicative of enclosed land, with no general right to roam. Good map reading and navigation skills are essential, particularly in poor weather. The images accompanying these details show samples of the terrain.

Our experience and observation show that many caches that require the collection of data can be completed without all the information, by applying logic, analysis of options and modern technology. To try to counter this, we have made this a two-stage cache with the first stage giving the location of the final cache in coded form. The code letters required to do the first stage are insufficient to do the final stage. There are 14 (but see paragraph above about running down the series) code letters and (we hope) setting out without all of these will be doomed to failure. You may think this is nasty, but we are just trying to make the cache live up to its difficulty rating! However, we are not trying to make people go round the whole collection more than once in search of the piece of code that they missed the first time. If you have missed one, let us know which ones you have and we will check whether you have visited the cache with the missing code. If you have, we will tell you what it is (and where it is hidden): if not, we will not tell you the code … or where to find it!

The reference coordinates given for the cache are in a very wet place - do not attempt to walk there. It has been selected to confuse cachers (and provide another meaning for CC). The first stage microcache (MC1) can be found at:

N 51 KA.HRM W 003 YM.CEF

The black plastic film canister here contains the coordinates, in code, for the final regular cache (RC2). You may notice that we have cheated very slightly in positioning RC2 … but only out of consideration for those seeking it!

Small swaps only, please.
