An Open Field Cache Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Arnold Evrkachen: 6 years ago, when I placed this cache, I hid it on the edge of an open field, hence the name. It's surprising how quickly a field can begin returning to forest. After 6 years the open field is gone.

So, I am archiving this cache, freeing up space in PSP for a new, probably better cache.

Thanks to all who found my cache over the years. Without you there would have been no reason to place it.

Geocache Description:

An ammo can hidden in Pocahontas State Park.

WARNING! THIS CACHE IS HIDDEN IN AN AREA OF THE PARK OPEN TO HUNTING. PLEASE TAKE ALL APPROPRIATE PRECAUTIONS.

Probably the best place to park is where Loop Forest Trail (a park road) meets Courthouse Road (N 37° 24.039 W 77° 33.300). There is a fee for parking; pay at the main park entrance off Beach Road or (shameless plug) buy an annual or lifetime pass.

Not all the caches in Pocahontas State Park are in the woods. This one is hidden on the edge of an open field. From the parking area it is approximately a 1 mile hike to the cache. Most of the way is on a wide, gravel fire road.

You may want to spend a weekend or longer at Pocahontas State Park. In addition to having numerous caches, its other amenities include hiking trails, biking trails, bridle trails, picnic areas, camping, a nature center, a CCC museum, a pool, and a lake for fishing and boating (bring your own small boat (no gasoline engines) or rent a canoe or paddle boat).
