Geology and mineralogy of the deposit
This geological wall represents the natural sequence of the rocks
associated with the ore deposit:
I Granodiorite gneiss, a metamorphic rock formed 380 million
years ago as the variscan mountains were formed
II Rotliegend, the debris from the erosion of the gneiss
mountains
III A few million years later the area was covered by a very
salty shallow ocean in which the Zechstein dolomites were
deposited.
IV Gradually sand and clay was deposited on the ocean floor
causing the ocean to recede. This marks the beginning of the Bunter
Sandstein stage
Water circulating in the sediments replaced the dolomites with
an up to 3m thick layer of manganese and iron oxides and
hydroxides.
The iron and manganese ore deposit is sandwiched between the
Gneiss and the overlaying Bunter Sandstone and is the principle ore
deposit of the Odenwald.
Iron ore mining was first mentioned here in the 8th century AD and
continued (with interruptions) well into the 20th century.
A great problem for the mines was water. To reach the
ore-bearing Zechstein layer, the miners had to make their way
through the overlaying Sandstone which often was filled with
water-bearing layers, forming the upper level of ground water.
To claim this Earthcache as found please upload a picture of you
and your GPSR in front of the entrance of the old gallery of the
Georg mine. Please do not shoot this photo in the gallery, the
flashlight would disturb the bats living in the gallery, especially
in winter!
Also send me the answers to the two following questions:
- How many millions of years ago did the deposition of the
Rotliegend sediments in the basins of the landscape take
place?
- How much meters below ground did the miners at Mine Juno strike
the water-bearing level and how much water had to be drained per
hour?
Follow the capital L in a yellow circle and learn at 17 stations
about the geologic situation between Vierstöck and Rohrbach and
about the mines making profit of it! The length of the trail is
app. 2mls, with the way back to the car app. 4 mls. If you want,
you can continue your walk with the Earthcache „Geo-Naturpark
Bergstraße-Odenwald: The mines of Rohrbach“. The total length of
track will be 8 mls if you walk back to your car or 6.5 mls if you
take the bus from „Reichelsheim (Odw.)-Rohrbach Friedhof“ to
„Reichelsheim (Odw.)-Ober-Kainsbach Vierstöck“. Look out for
connections at www.rmv.de soon as they are
rare.
Important: the trail crosses the back area of a shooting
range. There are bars across the paths; whenever this shooting
range is in use, the bars are closed, the path blocked. You’ll find
signs for a way around the shooting range nearby!
More informations about work and life in the ore mines can be
found at the Reichelsheim regional museum.
Deutsche Version
Dieser Steilhang markiert die Buntsandstein-Schichtstufe. An
