This cache honors the life and ultimate sacrifice of
Marine Staff Sergeant Richard Pummill, Taps 20 October 2005,
Nasser Wa Salaam, Iraq. A geocoin remembering SSG Pummill is making
its inaugural run in this cache.
First things first: Pack a lunch. Trust me on this, pack a
lunch.
It's about two miles round trip and you'll be in a great place
to
sit and eat it.
Parking is at High Rock Park, same as the
Dream of the Blue Heron cache.
Take the time to appreciate the beautiful Gretta
Moulton Gate while you're there. To the right you'll notice
the
blazes for the blue and yellow trails. Take the Blue Trail
even though the blue and yellow more or less follow each other.
Follow the
trail until you see something that looks like this:
That's famed Staten Island painter and member of the
Hudson
School Jasper
Cropsey's Looking Oceanward From Todt Hill.
Cropsey painted the landscape in 1895 at about the same
location
and as you can see, not a whole lot has changed since then
(at
least from this vantage point.)
So sit and relax. Have your lunch. Take a look around. Enjoy
the
"other" Staten Island. The geocache can wait. This is more
about
the journey, right? There's a disposable camera in the box, please
feel free to take a picture of yourselves or your surroundings
When you're done with the cache (it's an ammo box) and feel like
exploring further, here's a hint: Remember that staircase kind of
thing you went down to get to the cache? If you want to avoid going
up that same feature (I have and it's not fun), continue on the
Blue Trail until it meets back up with the Yellow Trail again and
take the Yellow Trail back.
