Geocache Description:

While on a walk around Sumner Beach we realised that there was no cache on this rock. So we decided to place one here. This rock significantly changed its form after the earthquakes.

While finding this cache there is no need for you to go to the top of the rock, although you will need to scramble up part way. There is a "natural seat" which looks out towards Cave Rock, at the other end of the beach. Please take care of loose rocks and do not approach if the rocks are slippery. This cache cannot be found at all tides, It is best accessed within 2 hours either side of LOW tide. If you do not want to get your feet wet, as close to low tide is best. Click here to find the tide times for Lyttelton.

This cache should not be attempted at high tide due to the possibility of strong currents around the rock.

Please park at one of the two parking areas mentioned in the waypoints. There is NO parking on the road closest to the cache. Biking or walking will lead you right to the cache using the coastal pathway or the beach.

Please bring your own pen/pencil and replace exactly as found.

There may be seals "sunbathing" on the rocks near the cache, there is no need to disturb the seals in order to find the cache. Thanks

As of the 15th of January 2024, this cache has been replaced after the original  container went missing. It is located in the same location, you will just need to reach in a bit further. Please cover well when replacing.
