How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

The route is steep and rocky but there is no need for technical gear. It will probably take you two hours to ascend some 370 metres.

This is the second AVC (Adamastor Virtual Cache) intended to encourage others to explore the wonders of nature and to pursue geocaching in areas where actual physical caches are considered inadvisable. These would be environmentally sensitive areas largely within most National Parks boundaries.

Adamastor, the Titan, whose brooding presence lies across the Southern Cape Peninsula, speaks to those “… who come in search for fleece of gold, within the limits of my dread domain.” (Luiz de Camoes ~ Lusiadas)

The message here is that the Virtual Series, would avoid physically disturbing any part of the environment and keep strictly to existing paths. As will be seen, such restrictions need not detract in any way from the magic, adventure and enjoyment that is geocaching.

TO CLAIM THIS CACHE:
The coordinates listed at the top of this page are the ultimate destination. You will need to check two intermediate locations on the way. To claim this virtual cache, please answer the following simple questions: (e-mail the answers to me, don't post them here even if encrypted)

INTERMEDIATE #1.
A short distance from the nearest car park, you will come across the site of an early working which at various times was run by John Osmond, a builder known as the “King of Simonstown” and George Smith, farmer. Would you say they and their workers were known as “Limeys”? If so, why? Please enclose a photograph.

INTERMEDIATE #2.
Two-thirds of the way up, in terms of altitude, you will come across a weapon of destruction which was never fired in anger. Please give the exact location in Latitude and Longitude.

DESTINATION #3.
At the given location, you will find a man-made edifice with an inscription. The first letter is “P “ and the last number is “5”. Please give the letters and numbers in between. Enjoy view of the secluded spa of the Goddess of Love.

NOTE:
  1. From Intermediate Point #2 there is only one way to the top. It is not a well-used path but it’s definite. Be sure to return the same way. However, from Intermediate #2, there is a pleasant easy alternative way down starting at: E 018° 27.403 / S 34° 17.770
  2. On this occasion, only single readings were taken. A larger “uncertainty factor” or EPE (Estimated Position Error) may therefore prevail.
