Geocache Description:

Chailey Free Church

This year (2010) celebrates the 125th year of a Church building on this site.

The original building was a second-hand prefabricated wood and corrugated iron structure brought from nearby Barcombe, and was known as the "Independant Undenominational Mission", although most people referred to it as the "Tin Chapel" or the "Mission Hall"..

This was re-erected, in 1885, on the land purchased for that purpose by James Ure McBean, the founder of the local nursery south of the Church now known as McBeans Orchids.

Mr McBean was converted to Christianity after attending a Salvation Army meeting on a street in Brighton.

After his death in 1910, his family continued their connection with the Church for a number of years, and over the years many improvements and additions took place.

The old "Tin Mission" was dismantled and replaced by the present building in 1998 and the name changed to "Chailey Free Church"

The Church is very friendly and you will be welcome to attend any of its services or functions.
Ladies Lunches and Mens' Breakfasts where guest speakers share there experiences with you are always well supported and very interesting.

If you visit on a Friday between 1000 and 1200 you will see a sign for "Coffee Stop".
This is open for all visitors to sit and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a piece of cake.....all for free, so why not make this part of your caching trip.

This cache has been placed with the permission of the trustees, and several other members of the congregation are aware of its location, so please pay a visit.
