We drive this road regularly and have always wondered what this memorial is for.
The memorial is on the scene of a serious car accident in which the Commanding Officer of the Beaufort West Stock Theft Unit died. Capt D Horn and Sgt J Weideman died on the scene. Insp G Olivier died at the hospital later in the day and Insp G Scholtz died two weeks later. Three other members of the unit were injured in the accident.
What makes the accident even more sad is that the son of Capt Horn, Sgt Darey Horn from the Oudtshoorn Stock Theft Unit was travelling with his commanding officer, Capt Lambrechts, in a vehicle a few kiliometers behind. All the officers were on their way to a workshop. The vehicle with Capt Lambrechts had stopped for fuel and had agreed to catch up with the others. About 14km after Albertinia they saw a cloud of dust on the side of the road. They then came on the gruesome scene with the vehicle on the side and all the occupants having been trown out of it.
The memorial was erected by the family of the deceased and the Beaufort West community.
