NNick is a great photographer!

Be careful as the hint is a giveaway. Often I would visit the Museum with my kids on free day. We would take an hour or two inside and then take a walk around the building. The first time I made the walk down the stairs with ‘The White City’ in my minds eye.

Enjoy the view of the Museum of Science and Industry as it reflects in the pond. This is the view the designers of this area worked so hard to achieve.

Beautiful!

After taking in the view, turn your back to the building and imagine ...

------------------------

1893

The White City was a vision of what a great city could be like. There were no beggars or garish signs, and the streets were immaculately clean. Picturesque walkways and waterways connected the magnificent exhibition halls. And these buildings were filled with the newest inventions of the age: among them, electric kitchens, calculating machines, and a gadget for viewing motion pictures, Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope.

The builder of this place understood the American mind. In Daniel Burnham's city, tradition and change, order and innovation, were in perfect harmony, suggesting to anxious Americans that they could enjoy all the conveniences of the Machine Age without changing their old values and habits. Visitors came away wondering why every American city couldn't be made over in the image of the White City.

Clarence Darrow lived at 1537 East 60th Street overlooking the Jackson Park lagoon for much of his professional life. Upon his death, his ashes were scattered on the water, and the bridge has become the site of an annual celebration of Darrow’s life and principles.

Dedication:

To AuntieNae and her caching crew from Wisconsin.

These gals come down and cache with a vengeance, sometimes inviting local cachers along for the ride. It is a pleasure to read their logs and to meet them at our events.

Not only do they LOVE geocaching, they also do a great job of CITO on their visits.

Also they have some great events.

You gals are always welcome and enjoy this special spot.
