Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Rolfe Park Trails located in Penacook. You can access the trails off from Penacook Street (what I called Sand Hill growing up) or from Rolfe Park (behind the furthest soccer goal area). There are no clear access points, but the trails can be found in these areas. Because of the sandy slopes and erosive nature of the soil, the City of Concord Conservation Commission ask that mountain bikes not be used on these trails. Your cooperation is appreciated.

I spent a great deal of my childhood enjoying Rolfe Park and the trails. I had friends who lived “down the bog,” and we used to sled and toboggan down the “ski trail” behind the park. The ski trail is now quite overgrown and part of the trail system. It was great fun sliding down the hill and landing in or near “the bog” at the bottom. The area is very steep in places and gullies are everywhere. Please be careful – especially if you have young children with you. I assigned the high difficulty for the terrain because of the steep gullies in places - especially from Penacook Street (which is the more scenic route). The easier route is from Rolfe Park. I went in from Penacook Street and parked at the bottom of the hill on the left – near the telephone pole marked as #20. A little further down Penacook Street there is a brown fence - there is access from this area too (from the left of the fence). Willow Hollow Brook travels through the trail system.

There is no need to bushwack until the last 60-80 feet (educated estimate). The cache is hidden in an ammo can. Please rehide the cache well.

Abial Walker Rolfe donated the land in 1920, to be used as a park, playground, and athletic field. The Rolfe family had much to do with the development of Concord. The Rolfe family purchased hundreds of acres of land in the Penacook area from 1736-1806. There were many notable family members, including Robert Abial Rolfe – better known as Red Rolfe, who was the NY Yankees’ all-time great 3rd baseman. (Go RED SOX!)

Please remember to Cache In and Carry Out and respect the flora and fauna. (While you are in the neighborhood check out the historic Rolfe Barn on Penacook Street.)

08/05/05: Please see log by Labrie5 -- appears there is a paper wasp nest about 120 feet away from the cache. They went in via the park. I have been told that the nest is on the left hand side half way down the steep hill in a tree only about 10 inches in diameter. Their son bumped the tree and it disturbed the wasps. (I always come via Penacook Street and have not encountered any wasps nests - I am allergic so am always on the look out :) dlv
