Return to the daze of yesteryear to search out the nano at the site of an authentic oil derrick.
Shortly before the turn of the 20th century, Corsicana's growing population was outpacing its supply of water. So the city leaders formed a corporation to dig a water well to tap an artesian well. However, once the drilling began in 1894, instead of water, they hit a sizeable pocket of oil and gas. Thus began Texas' first oil boom. An oil refinery was built in 1897 and by 1898 there were 287 producing wells in the Corsicana field. In 1923, an even bigger field was discovered. The Powell field in its heyday had 550 wells producing 354,000 barrels per day. In 1953 it was claimed to have the highest per capita income of any Texas city. Yet again, in 1956 a new oilfield was discovered in East Corsicana, and within months there were over 500 wells, nearly one drill rig in every backyard. To celebrate its history, the city of Corsicana established an annual event called Derrick Days held each spring since 1976. In 2010 as a tribute to the industry, the Corsicana Preservation Foundation built a full-size replica of a oil field derrick and pump jack for permanent display at Town Oil Field Plaza.
