Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Wieting!

Toledo's Wieting Theatre was constructed more than a century ago and opened in 1912 as a state-of-the-art opera house. The theatre, built by Mrs. Ella Wieting in memory of her late husband, Phillip, became a gift to the City of Toledo. Today the theatre exists as a not-for-profit, community-owned and operated cinema, and venue for live performances.

The house, concessions, box office, and cinema operations were renovated in 2012 to celebrate the 100th anniversary using $1.4 million in funding raised locally and through state and regional foundation grants. The structure is one of a handful of local buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 120+ theatre volunteers, including yours truly, who helped with renovation continue to serve the theatre and we simply like to describe the Wieting in one word...

MAJESTIC!

In order to log this virtual cache please provide one of two things:

  1. in your log include a "selfie" or a group photo of your party in front of the theatre with "The Wieting" name above the front steps, or the plaque above the center doors, visible in the photo; or
  2. take a photo of your GPS in front of the theatre with "The Wieting" name above the front steps, or the plaque above the center doors, visible in the photo, and email the photo to me (summitt.dweller@gmail.com); or
  3. if you can't take a photo please email me (summitt.dweller@gmail.com) the number of bricks that form the arch above the door on the north side of the theatre. Do NOT include this number in your log!

Please note that if you choose the "selfie" or group photo option any images you provide will be visible to anyone who visits the cache page. If you choose either of the other options the information you share via email will not be posted.

You do NOT have to enter the theatre to log this virtual cache, but you are welcome to do so whenever the theatre is open (most Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights between 6:30 PM and roughly 9:00 PM) IF the manager or another volunteer is available to show you around. If you do enter, I recommend a visit to our history exhibit... it's on an old exterior wall of the theatre, which is now indoors after the 2012 renovation. Just enter the lobby and proceed to your left, pass through the doors nearest the box office window, then turn left twice and proceed down the hall. The exhibit will be on your right just outside our new restrooms.

If you would like to learn more about the theatre before (or after) your visit I recommend https://Wieting.TamaToledo.com.
