Photobucket

ExploreWV is a new group of Geocache enthusiasts in West Virginia brought to you by the WV Department of Education and the Arts, the WV Division of Tourism, and the WV Division of Culture and History. Through ExploreWV, various Geocaching trails and challenges will be organized, providing an excellent and adventurous way to see our beautiful Mountain State. You will be treated to some of the state's best tourist spots, museums, historical sites, Main Streets, and so much more.

The first ExploreWV GeoChallenge is the WV Geocoin challenge. Be one of the first 250 geocachers to complete the inaugural event of ExploreWV and receive a limited-edition West Virginia Geocoin. The WV Geocoin Challenge is a four-part adventure that will take you throughout the Mountain State where you will discover hidden caches at tourist attractions, museums, and historic markers.

Each "cachegory" will contain nine to 10 caches and seekers must find and document at least five caches from each, plus the cache at the West Virginia State Museum. Documentation will be through an official ExploreWV Playbook and you must find clues in each cache and document them in a crossword puzzle to receive the limited-edition Geocoin. There is a limit of one coin per household.

But remember, to receive your official ExploreWV Playbook and to be eligible for the West Virginia Geocoin, you must be a registered member of ExploreWV GeoChallenge. Visit us online at GeocacheWV to register and download the Playbook.

The towering New River Gorge Bridge was once the world’s longest steel-arch bridge and at 876 feet high, it is still the highest vehicular bridge in North and South America. The bridge’s shape makes it look as if it was built into the mountains and has always been part of the New River Gorge. To celebrate this architectural feat, each October, the bridge is the site of Bridge Day, which is the one day a year that base jumping is allowed off the bridge. The festival brings out thousands of people (rain, shine, or snow) and is a chance to sample West Virginian hospitality with homemade crafts, food vendors, and base jumping and whitewater rafting simulations. For more information on the New River Gorge Bridge and surround areas, visit GeocacheWV or New River Gorge.

The fundamental purpose of the National Park Service (NPS) is to ‘conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations (16 U.SC 1)’. Placing a cache on NPS lands without a permit is a violation of NPS regulations. These regulations are intended to protect the fragile environment and the natural, cultural and historical resources found in parks. You are ultimately responsible for the cache, so please make sure you know the rules and regulations.

Cache search guidelines include: no digging or disturbing of rocks, soil or vegetation; clues for locating cache must be appropriate and family/kid friendly; no placement of tobacco, ammunition, weapons, drugs (medications), alcohol, food, vulgar or pornographic items, personal/hygiene products, chemicals or scented/perfumed items/substances, explosives/fireworks, advertising materials; park hours and closures will be observed during cache searches; metal detectors may not be utilized in cache searches.

You will be seeking a small lock-and-lock container. The cache is located along Bridge Trail, a moderate to difficult trail with spectacular views, but only for a short distance. Please be courteous when hiking in the Forest Service area. The cache is placed within 6 feet of the trail so please don't venture down into the woods. There will be a label under the lid with a little fact about the area and the code word needed for documentation in the Playbook. Please use etiquette and be courteous when Geocaching and place the container exactly where you found it.

A special thanks goes to CacheSleuth for placing and maintaining this cache!
