Geocache Description:

A fairly tough hike in a beautiful state park!

You will be looking for a green ammocan. The can is hidden in the Horsethief Canyon State Park, when I spoke to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks about placing the cache, they advised their only concern would be the possible damage to the terrain due to heavy traffic. I assured them that this cache would not be heavily sought due to the difficulty. Should you seek the cache and notice any sort of trail forming, please e-mail me right away tyrfryr@cox.net and I will go relocate it.

The cache contains the Westward Willie TB, six chopped hotrods, German medals, a glow stick, hat badges and the usual notebook, pen pencil and Geo-Sheet. The Geo-Sheet was probably a waste of time as there is very little traffic other than horseback riders here.

This area is loaded with wildlife, sandstone bluffs, springs, beaver dams and this will be a relatively strenuous find. The cache is hidden well and will be a challenge to find. We placed it in the hopes of drawing new cachers to this beautiful park. If you enter from the State Park parking lot, you will drive by a rapidly growing prairie dog town, cute little buggers! We saw 23 deer today, and lots of hawks. Normally we will see over 100 turkeys, never saw a one today, I am sure they are still around though.

The cache is available from the west or the south. You can hike in from the public hunting area to the west, passing by the Sandstone Canyon and the Red Rock Canyon, or you can hike in from the Horsethief Canyon parking lot. The Horsethief Canyon requires a park permit for access. If you have the state vehicle permit, you can enter any state park at no charge, there is also a daily permit available. I would recommend spending the three or thirty dollars, unless you are really into hiking. I have hiked across and back, it will take several hours to do the cache and return from the west.

The park can also be covered on horseback or bicycle. No motorized vehicles are allowed in the park and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will really frown upon you if you enter with a vehicle. I would imagine the fine is quite stiff.

One thing to remember is the beaver dams are your friends! There are many in the area and you will find that they will shorten your trip a lot. Go out, have fun, enjoy the scenery, this is about as good as it gets here in Kansas!
