Geocache Description:

Enjoy a view of Newberry Volcano!

Approach from above, unless you're Spiderman. You can stay 3 meters away from the cliff edge and get this cache.

Driving close to the cache might require a high-clearance vehicle or dual-sport motorcycle, but adventurous passenger cars can probably make it. Use your good judgment. Note that the area is closed to motor vehicles December 1 through March 31 due to elk migration. Approach during those times of year will require hiking, mountain biking, or other mode of transportation.

The long, broad hill you see 40 km to the southeast is Newberry Volcano. It's a special type of volcano called a shield volcano, the same type that the Hawaiian Islands are made from. Newberry Volcano is fairly massive at 40 km in diameter, and 500 cubic km in volume. Its highpoint of 2435 m can be reached by car during the summer months.

Newberry first erupted about 600,000 years ago, and most recently erupted around 1300 years ago.
